kx250 bush setup
 
just getting back into riding and skillset is at the lower end.

have gone for 1 good ride in the bush/trails on my kx250 (rec reg'd) and was good to get the cobwebs off. looking for some setup advice....

- ive heard 18" rear would be better than the current 19". true?

- guy before me was a similar height but much lighter. would it pay to have the bike "setup" for me? ie suspension changes?

- was a bit surprised to be a bit cramped for space when going for the rear brake. maybe raise height a little on the rear shock?

any other advice welcome

90% rider and practice at this stage but anything to help on setup cant be a bad thing.


NOTE: bike has already had a few extra teeth added to the back (was that way when i got it). currently 13:52

Sell it and get something more suited.

I had a crf250R for trails once, once I fitted a rekluse and redone the suspension valving it wasn't too bad to be honest

Wouldn't bother with the cost of swappin to an 18" rear unless u got môney to do so? Less chance of puncture, tyre rolls/curves round shit better apparently, better tyre selection with 18".

Get bar risers/offsets n different bars if u need em. Kxs were smallish. Maybe taller seat/lower pegs. Not sure wat u meant with rear spring-tryin to make bike taller? Higher profile tyre too mite help. Maybe longer rear pedal n shifter if ya got big feet.

Get ya susp sprung for ya weight. Maybe re valve again if money no concern.

what kinda costs involved with:

- picking up a 2nd hand 18" rear?
- carb tune? pretty sure its stock but seems to rich. plugs got plenty of oil on it
- respring and/or revalve (not exactly sure what that involves)?

Your bike your money so spend it how you wish,by all means if you can get a second hand 18" wheel then go for it,more tyres available to suit the differing conditions in the bush,as for suspension you may or may not be overweight for the current springs which means the suspension will not be working right for you,and once you re spring the bike the valving will now be wrong as it was valved for the original springs

I would try and get a flywheel weight and engine tuning to smooth out the power delivery as much as you can. Mix that in with some suspension tuning and it would be fine. Many people have ridden them in the bush over the years, however generally the standard engine responsiveness and suspension is opposite of what's ideal for riding in the bush and single trail.

19" wheels are fine, keep the rubber fresh and pressures right with UHD tubes, no dramas there.

If you're a short bloke and you're considering doing some suspension work, grab a lowering link, it will make life much better, especially with a kick-start bike.

If you can get the engine right, not too pokey and aggressive and the suspension right you can have some fun and maybe justify that new bike.

thanks for the tips. im about 6ft1 so actually just feel a bit cramped when trying to get to the rear brake and youre right about the responsiveness. 1st gear bottom end very lively.

previous owner was similar height but prob more around 70-75kg where as im around the 85-90kg (plus gear)

Check your sag and get that right. That will help with the suspension. Ultimately though the valving, if it hasn't been changed for trail riding or enduro, won't be right, so you'll either have to live with it, or spend some coin to get it to work in the bush.

Taller seat foam would help as it gets your arse further away from the pegs and gives you more space. As for bar risers, everyone has their opinions, I don't like them as they tend to make it more difficult to get my body into the correct positions. I would look into getting your riding position right, it helps a lot to have the right body position and it will change the way you want the bike setup.
