KTM 300 EXC crank seal replacement

I suspect the crank seal needs replacing as its using gearbox oil and not leaking anywhere that I can see. I understand it will be the RHS one and can be done without splitting the cases.

Anyone done it? Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Yep, pretty easy.

Ideally use a seal hook to prise the old one out, but a screwdriver works OK.

Take out the old sleeve and O ring, replace them and use a socket the same diameter as the outside of the new seal to tap it into place.

Also replace the o-ring and the spacer.

If it goes again you will need to replace main bearings.

Not even a 300 revs low enough to run the drive sprocket straight off the crank.

top up the gear oil run the bike does it smoke allot? after if fully warmed up

drain the oil, run the bikes does it still smoke the same? you can ride it for a k or so no issue what so ever, if no change in the smoke coming out the exhaust, look else where.

To me it appears to smoke a lot more that it should. Plus a mate reckons it smelt like burning engine oil when he was riding behind me.

These are the first signs of RHS crank seal failure... loss of transmission oil confirms it.

...but if your chain's too tight, might as well do your countershaft seal while you're at it

Gearbox oil smells like crap, when being burnt via combustion.

Kipo, crank nut is left hand thread.
as per others, replace seal, sleeve(the sleeve does wear) and if necessary the o-ring.
Check the bearings for slop while you're in there
