Sunday = scam day?

I have my bike for sale on Gumtree and Bikesales, for the second Sunday in a row I get a message saying this:

Thanks for getting back, I'm fine with the price likewise the condition as described on the advert, exactly what am looking for, I just got a job with Falcon Oil & Gas Ltd. Beetaloo Basin, Northern Territory, Australia and the reception is terrible. We do not have access to phone at the moment, which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility. I am already in talks with the courier that will handle the pick-up and delivery to my new house here in Darwin.

As regards the payment, I can pay you through direct bank deposit (EFT), using paypal instant bank wire transfer service, linked up with my ANZ bank account, I will need your bank details and I will make the payment through paypal facility to your bank account, all I will need is your acct number, BSB number and acct name.

Thanks....
Await your reply"

Needless to say my reply would be filtered out here, but contained "drink bleach"

I always put on the bottom of my gumtree ads

"No scammers no spammers no lowball offers and no emails."

Stops them all in their tracks

There's something about Scumtree and the people it attracts.

I have a 2015 85SX advertised at the moment.

Of course I must have come down in the last shower, because they assume I'd be happy to swap for a 2017 250F to help them launder their stolen bike

I just say "no oil rig workers"
and ignore the ones who email anyway.

So how do they scam you if you just give them your account number and BSB?

Using paypal they can reverse the transaction. So it may appear in your account, then vanish.

I believe they get you to do a Paypal request, they then transfer the money as a 'gift' via Paypal and they provide you a photoshopped screenshot so it looks like it's been paid.

The person then proceeds to put give their item to the courier or whatever is collecting what you're selling.

The buyer then has your item and you have no money.

Of course you'd have to be pretty stupid to hand over your item when the money is not in your bank account, but people are stupid so this is why the scam still works sometimes.

Some idiot in QLD fell for it recently and he handed over his BMW or whatever it was to the scammer (Who was AirB&B in a posh neighbourhood so he didn't arouse suspicion.)

I'm close to giving up buying and selling through anything but ebay. Scammers arent the biggest issue... its too many ****wits. The endless messages 'is it still for sale' or 'lowest price?' i mean at least write a sentence?

Some bloke in melb let some one test ride his modern ducati while 'his mate parked out the front' soon as he rode off so did the car and that was that...i dont like having people to my place...feel like i am being scoped out all the time.

...and I get accused of being a hoarder!

Like you Jimmy, I can't be bothered dealing with f*ckwits, so I just hang on to stuff.
Being halfway between Helltown and Ice-ville doesn't help either.
I sometimes consider just leaving stuff out by the highway, in the hope that someone half decent finds it... going by the regular appearance of abandoned stolen cars, I'm not too optimistic
I'm beginning to believe poper, that "country towns breed bad people"
...or is it just that the freeway has made it easier for the scum to escape into the wilderness?
