World Enduro Super Series 2018

WORLD ENDURO SUPER SERIES 2018 SCHEDULE

Rnd 1. Extreme XL Lagares (Portugal) May 11-13
Rnd 2. Erzbergrodeo Red Bull Hare Scramble (Austria) May 31 June 3
Rnd 3. Trefle Lozerien AMV (France) June 8-10
Rnd 4. Red Bull Romaniacs (Romania) July 24-28
Rnd 5. Red Bull 111 Megawatt (Poland) September (Date TBC)
Rnd 6. TBA
Rnd 7. Gotland Grand National (Sweden) October 26-27
Rnd 8. Red Bull Knock Out (The Netherlands) November 10

Some bright spark has packaged the best of extreme, enduro, cross country & beach-style into one Series. It's clearly designed to appeal to a wider rider base, ensuring greater entries & more coverage. No wonder Taddy came back! Perhaps Sea To Sky is #6?

With plans to expand outside Europe in 2019, it would be so great to see an Australian leg - Wildwood!!

I just read that -

A) KTM & Husqvarna have announced their full Factory team's participation in WESS

B) WESS is based an hour from Mattighofen - what a coincidence!

So, the KatoVarna factory has pulled out of the WEC (remember - they won diddly last season & had their arses handed to them by TM, Sherco & Beta) and now have two fully supported Factory teams entered in what looks like THEIR OWN SERIES.

Devil's Advocate - well, WEC events do look so boring & Hard Enduro is so hot right now..

I, for one, welcome our Orange overlords

It does look a bit like KTM have gone and created their own series to race and win it. Someone posted somewhere else that the founder/creater of the WESS idea was in fact tied back to KTM directly. In their defence, WEC has never looked so bad, I think the calls to try and push the series in South America was their demise, they really should have stuck to europe and kept a focus on the quality of the events.

Interesting to see Phillips has reversed his decision to retire from the WEC though and is returning next year with CH racing. Also wonder how much KTM's change in direction was the driver behind riders leaving. Maybe Namobtin really just wanted to race WEC, more so than race for GG. Even Sanders leaving was due to the direction changes.

Either way, it would be great to see both series survive and propser. The WESS looks interesting, definitely more hard enduro than anything else though.

The WEC race format had to change, they went the with the wrong solution in 2017. There are other ways to draw in the crowds.
The WESS suits 2-strokes & the event will guarantee KTM a return for their investment in TPI. It may become a one horse (KTM & Husqvarna) race though, with other manufacturers not being able to compete with huge investments in technology.
The success of the WESS may even hinge on other brands keeping up with & meeting the emission rules - Euro 4 then 5 & presumably, more into the future.
