250exc 1998 maintenance

I'm in the market for my first bike. I've found a 1998 250 exc and want to know what sort of maintenance i would need to do to keep it in good shape? I will be mainly using the bike for commuting 20km to uni, with the odd off-road escapade. I'm pretty well mechanically minded, but not much experience with motos, how much can i do myself?

You can do it all! I have a 98 KTM 125 EXC, oil changes are easy, usually after 2 good rides i change it. Buy a filter cleaner kit, do it yourself after every ride. Get an owners manual, IF YOU CAN READ, YOU CAN MAINTAIN!!
Enjoy your bike....

they are pretty trouble free, but having said that they are crap for commuting.
Also they dont have an ignition switch so make an easy target for thieves in a public place such as a uni

Will...the 98 kato 2t was a great enduro racer, but its as much a commuter as a Ducati 996 is a dirt bike!!!

Get a DRZ250 or something similar.
Just my oppinion.
