I have an 04 XR650R that i have used for a few years as an ADV bike.
It has a Safari long range tank on it and i also have an 8ltr Nomad rear tank that can be used too.
Had to replace the seat with a Seat Concepts foam and cover and use Wolfman E12 soft panniers. Have also put Kibblewhite valves and stage 1 cam in it, improves power and economy.

The good- reliablity, basic mechanics, good power and easy to turn back to stock setup for single track or Enduro type riding.
The bad- stock seat is good for a half hr, noisy (i have an FMF Powerbomb on it), fuel economy could be better, crap carby, painful to restart after laying down, minimal oil capacity @ 1.7ltrs, valve recession.

As was mentioned before the counter shaft seal can blow out, usually from over-filling the engine with oil..

It's a great bike and won't ever sell the thing but it's no match for my shiney new Africa Twin.
