Nutty,
How did the Isuzu Dmax turn out. I have been looking at the LSM/ LSU to carry the bikes in the back and campling as dont want to tow a trailer. I dont need a Ranger wildtrack, as i knwo it will get used as a ute So i wnat soemthing reliable and solid.
Did you issue get resolved? Whats the general thoughts about them now after you have had it a while
Cheers

The dealers A/C equipment was too old and decrepit to even get a decent set of readings. I fixed it myself. It had turned an O'ring on the LP side of the TX valve block. New O'rings (properly lubed this time!), dye bomb and fresh gas. Didn't reload the compressor oil or change the reciever-dryer. All good. Vent temp is now 3.5C. Like a Toyota! The dealer service (Country Motor Company) was poorer than I had hoped for.

The vehicle itself is a great little truck. If you're not heavy towing they're very economical. It rides acceptably, not a single rattle, 1000km days on one tank, nice build quality. Probably the best thing about it is its truck-spec stability softwear, it is superb.

I wouldn't buy a new one with the DPF and high mount turbo.
The older 5speed auto (no DPF) uses a lot less fuel, especially on 80km/h roads.

The 5speed manual is also nicer to drive than the 6speed if you're not towing over 2-2.5 tonnes.

All the Tuk-tuks have their technical and operational foibles mate, the D-Max is pretty white-bread but nothing stands out as poorly engineered. 55,000km with no leaks, rattles or recalls.

Thanks Nutty
Glad you got it sorted OK.
Yeah i really dont want a DPF unless i have to have one. Seems so many people are having issues, as well as the increased fuel consumption.
Thanks for the info on the Dmax's
Cheers

Nothing wrong with Isuzu's DPF , it's not a hilux so dont panic , the problems are rare and far between , fuel consumption is good , I drove a standard 4x4 dual cab and getting 7.4 to a 100 , mine with all the offroad gear gets sub elevens at real world speeds not idling around at 80kph , absolute worst is 18.6litres per 100 weighing in on the scales well and truly over GCM max .

Needs a tune then. I don't muck around on country trips, no one ever passes me and mine gets 11s pulling 2200kg. Unloaded, I'd be SPEWING if it guzzled 7.4!

Did you roll down a hill for 9.9 km's? Serious question.

Nope, odo reads short, works' test loop is 10km.

All largely flat, open roads. We've used the same loop for 30 years so all comparisons stack up.

Mine is stock apart from exhaust, hi-flow cat, catch can, precise valve adjustment and quality lubricants. Flash tune is set for 500Nm so very conservative. Modified gearbox tune and aftermarket TCC (variable force) solenoid so that box both shifts and locks the clutch (earlier) at tuned torque level. Box tune took almost 1l/100km off, the stock box tune is atrocious (and the six-speed Aisin auto is worse).

A D-max will make 650Nm with the OEM turbo and stock internals, I'm looking for driveability, quietness and economy, not performance. I've also cured the 4JJ1 start-up rattle that all the Dealers blame on the cam-chain tensioner (which is a blatant lie, the tensioners' ratchet-pawls are super-fine).

It drives much the same as a stock Ranger or Colorado without the Rangers torque surge or the Colorados turbo lag. It's quite a relaxing touring/freeway car.

p.s. My 360HP Automatic Commo ute did 7.7l/100km @ 17C around the test loop after a Pontiac hi-miler freeway tune was installed.

Life average over 55,000km is 8.0, there'd be 4-5K of off-road/sand/towing in there I guess Al. That's (flow to rail-return flow)/odo not the MIL's odo Vs pulse width/rpm/rail pressure so it's pretty accurate. The MIL reeds a touch low IMO.
