Wink 20150509 10 Corryong O/N Ride

On Saturday, I led Doug and Steve to Mt Ainslie for a 7.00am rendezvous to join Darin and others on an overnight ride to Corryong and back commencing at 7.30am. Darin rolled up on his DR650 around 7.10am (making a total of 4 DRs) followed by Tom BMW650GS, Andrew KTM640 and Ian KTM990. Darin then had a call from Ed who advised that enroute he had hit a Roo and due to damage to himself and his bike would not be joining this ride. So, we had a compliment of 7 riders.

The Horizon looks inviting

Darin led us west via Coppins X, Urriarra X, Mountain Creek, Sawyers Gully and Wee Jasper to Wee Jasper. We continued west on WJR before turning south on Roberts, and SW on Cotterills and taking Brindabella briefly west to McDonnells which we took south. The latter sections were damp and slippery in places and we were riding into some misty rain squalls. We turned west again onto Argalong and rode it to Tumut for a break. Tumut was teeming with traffic on the main street. I took the opportunity to don my torso rain jacket which proved fortuitous.

Darin then led us south on SMH and took us SW on Blowering Dam Access Rd to Main Range Trail which was a hoot. At one uphill I tried to stand and was being hindered by my backpack waist strap which I had failed to fasten and had got tangled in my Moose rack. I paused mid hill and managed to disentangle it as Steve (Sweep) pulled up alongside and I proceeded to drop the bike. Steve quickly urged me to kill the engine which I did. After righting the bike and fastening the waist strap I proceeded uphill without further bother.

We ultimately joined Snubba/Yellowin Maragle Powerline, after having some fun in the red clay of a pine plantation having to render some assistance to Ian and Tom as their gearing was high for the snotty stuff. We were also on some very slippery trails where Doug?s borrowed GPS came adrift of its yellow sticky tape. In the process of turning back and collecting it he slipped and fell in the red clay.

By the time we got to Elliott we were all wet to some degree and the rain was getting quite heavy so it was agreed to slab it on Elliott and Tooma into Tumbarumba for a break and a pie. Meanwhile Doug had gone off to rinse off the red clay and buy some cotton glove liners to combat the cold.

Our next destination was the Jingellic Hotel for a drink via the tar. The rain had abated but we were now getting the wind chills from the speed on the tar. Whilst having a drink we let our wettest gear drip dry.

Darin was going solo to see if he could get some farmers access permissions and rejoin us at Corryong. So, Steve took the lead with Andrew now sweeping. We took River Rd which was fantastic as we had good visibility and hardly any traffic. We then slabbed in on Tintaldra Rd and Murray River Rd into Corryong. We refuelled before heading to Corryong Courthouse Hotel and arranging our digs before hitting the bar for drinks and dinner.

Sunday morning dawned and we were all ready for provision of our breakfast (and cut lunches) some of us still in our damp gear.

Dougs battery was virtually flat so with Steve aboard we gave him a push start which worked and after a short while we were on our way. Darin led us NE thru Towong and across the Murray. It was then north on Tooma thru Greg Greg and east on Welumba Creek Rd and thru a gate onto Greg Greg FT and it started to rain.

After roughly 2.5kms Doug ran into trouble with his chain coming loose and after some investigation it was found that his cush bearings were on their way out. Darren and Tom returned to us as Doug had just completed tightening the rear wheel tensioners. It was then decided that Doug gently head back towards some form of shelter with Steve as escort while Darin continued to lead the rest of us with Andrew as sweep.

The rain was getting worse and I for one could hardly see thru the visor and moisture inside and out. After a few wobbles in the greasy conditions we regrouped briefly at Swampy Plains Creek Rd before heading towards Cabramurra. It was around Jagumba (Loc) that we were riding in an inch of gelid slush with sleet and snow dropping visibility to 15m. I was in second spot as I passed Bradley/O?Briens Hut and saw Darins tracks going straight on by. Had I wavered I probably would have contemplated staying there.

I finally caught up to Darin stopped and warming his hands with the exhaust gases at the Tumut Pond Res wall. Tom was next and we waited for Ian and Andrew. We were getting concerned so rode back a short distance and encountered them approaching.

So it was then off to Cabramurra for a coffee under cover. We alighted there and I was sad that there was no undercover parking and about the only dry spot on my bike was a bit of saddle. Andrew was keen to push on and get down low pronto. So being of similar mind, we bid our byes and headed off for Kiandra.

Andrew was leading and I was taking full advantage of his rear light so I could follow his lines. Otherwise, I was in a mess with minimal vision and resorting to a semi open visor just to discern the snow plough poles. By the time we reached SMH I was really cold and was glad to see two semi trailers and two 4WDs sweep by on the way to Cooma. We peeled out behind them and followed them at a steady pace avoiding un-necessary wind chill. Around Providence Portal the rain abated and we even had some intermittent rays of sun which certainly lifted my spirits.

We pulled in at Adaminaby for a brief stop and I alerted the family to Dougs plight while Andrew donned some dry gear. Whilst doing so we saw Steve ride by on a mission to Numerella to fetch his BT50 and return to rescue Doug (somewhere).

Andrew then led me to Cooma at a swift pace and pausing only to check how I was we pushed on towards Canberra.

The wind was ghastly and was buffeting me sideways on the road. Around Royalla we were baulked by some slow traffic and the rain clouds loomed. Andrew went his way at the Calwell roundabout and I sped for home arriving just before the first squalls hit.

I called the family and advised of my safe arrival and my need for a hot bath. I could not feel the hot water and had to cool it to avoid scalding myself. My 1.9m frame does not fit into 1.75m bath so it took some to get my gelid limbs warmed up, as the bath went tepid in no time.

In any case it was a cool adventure making some new friends (Darin, Ian and Tom) with some new (to me) tracks that suited my skill set. Thanks Darin!
