Broken Collarbone

So as a few of you know I broke a few bones on a Spill. I really thought my Collarbone would need to be pinned, I mean it wasn't exactly a Tallyho Paper separating the Bones. So I had it out with the Hospital Doctors to which the Orthopaedic convinced me the treatment was right and to get an X-ray at 3 weeks to check progress. The radiologist freaked out at the 3 week mark and Doctor wanted me to follow it up with Surgeon. Seen the Surgeon at the 3 weeks mark. He asked me how it was. I responded with it feels better than what it looks on X-ray. He said its normal not to see the forming bone for another week and sent me home and said if I felt that I didn't need the 6 week follow up don't contact him.

So I've been out camping on the weekend of the 6 week mark. I take the GSXR out for a ride on the 7week weekend. Feels not to bad. Pull a few wheelies and a few laps of Peachester and 4000 out to Woodford and back feels okay, I mean their is still some pain in there but I feel its well within acceptable limits.

At rest its pain free, hurts a little to lay on it or roll over it try to push myself out of bed, but for the most part isn't to bad and was contemplating going for a gentle dirt bike ride in the coming week. The GP was happy to Cleared me back to work on Thursday. My Physio was Stoked with how much strength I had

So after all the above I get a letter to say I need a surgical Review which I wasn't expecting as the Original treating Otho said if I didn't feel the need to come in don't worry about contacting him which I didn't. Turns out he no longer works out of Sunshine Coast University Hospital and refered my review on which I wasn't made aware of via this letter early this week. Due to me trying to go back to work I ask them to bring it forward for the final tick and he sees me sends me into get a x-ray comes back. Looks the same as the 3 week picture. Surgeon is not impressed even though I tell him it feels pretty decent and instructs me take another 6 weeks off don't do anything, Basically back to sling restriction with out the sling otherwise I will need an Operation. He then goes on to say that the operation has a high incidence of complications due to nerves, lung, large arteries in area and said complications range from serve to fatal.

This has left me feeling like my first impression was correct and I've wasted the last 7.5 weeks of recovery only to waste the next 6 to get to the inevitable to have another 6 week recovery post op just cause none of these surgeons have the sack to man up and have go.

Does anyone have any experience in/with handling this?
Its kind of knocked me a bit cause to me I knew it felt It was healing crooked but not to badly. Haven't taken any Pain relief in week and half or so.

Oh the ribs don't look good either but I can sneeze/cough most times pain free as well. 3 weeks a go a Sneeze resulted in my nearly passing out with pain.

3 days post bingle.

One Week post rider/bike seperation

Three weeks post tumble

7 weeks 2 days post prang

Sounds a bit like this, My sons 14 and has broken 4 x collarbones.
This year after breaking his for arm at AFL and getting an op on that he was stuffing around and breaks his collarbone looked like yours but with a fragment of bone floating around.

Doc at casualty says i think you need an op wait a week get an X-ray come back to the clinic which is the public hospital.

The next Doc there says he looks ok that will heal but with a lump no surgery needed. Young blokes happy but we are skeptical.
I think he says wait 4 weeks and get another X-ray and then go to a private ortho and get final check up.

The times dragging out and the next X-ray report suggests he needs an op to fix it. We hit the roof, the young blokes not very happy and think what a waste of time he'd be half healed by now.

Next up finally get into the surgeon and he says no thats ok that gap will close leaving just a lump.
I know kids heal different to adults as there growing but opinions seem to vary. Id go get another opinion as we had 2 surgery's vs 2 non but all at different times. I think its around 8 weeks for a bone to heal but 1 year for full strength.

Cheers

Yeah, I guess to me it feels not to bad. But all along in my gut I knew it needed surgery. It just feels like I'm spinning my wheels and I want to get back to work and riding. It's actually starting to bug me starting to get cabin fever

All too familiar tale.

I've learnt a few things.

Get private health insurance. Check out of public hospital ASAP.

See specialist in the private system. Handle everything privately. Costs money but you get the job done.

Yeah I was admitted to public. But they transferred me to Sunshine Coast University when they found out I had Private Health. So it was all billed to my insurance company. I have medibank blue ribbon.

Always trust your gut instinct. You only get one shot with your health and 2 or 3 opinions are ALWAYS required then make your own decision. 26 broken bones myself and the only one that I regret is letting a trainee nurse try and reposition my finger. For every other bone, listen to the docs, guage the pain/feel and do what you know is right. Don't ever trust the docs - it's not their body and they don't care.
Just looking at week 1 x-ray, there was no way that was going to 'fuse' with that big of a gap without serious manipulation. Even more obvious by week 3.
Go and get it operated on, fix it up. Do the rehab and physio and you'll never know it happened in the long run.

Thanks man. Just a blow considering I've already been riding the road bike and taken that time off to recover. Part of me wants to just tell them to jam it and not go near anyone I just worry about it becoming a non union
