Charging iPhone from the bikes electrics?

I use my iPhone as a gps/stopwatch using a Quadlock sytem on my bars. I'm really happy with the mount, it's solid as a rock even a race pace over a 3 hour XC. Only probelm is battery life. Is it possible to just wire in a 12v plug into the headlight power for example and charge my phone from that without any issues?

I bought one of these....

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Waterproo...item5d67aaaee8

and wired it directly to my battery and also spliced in an on/off switch so it's only drawing power when I want my phone charged or GPS on,it's on my KLX450R which is notorious for poor stator and I haven't had any problems thus far

If you're using a GPS app like Gaia, MotionX etc they upload the maps to your phone and then you don't need cellular data (don't need to be in phone range) for them to work. The GPS apps work only using the GPS links. So If you don't need your phone for calls, you can switch it to airplane mode and drastically extend the battery life, and the GPS will work fine.

There are a bunch of adventure/ hike people who use their phones for long periods and reckon they work as well or better than a dedicated GPS.

This page gives instructions on how to get maximum battery life:
http://www.adventurealan.com/recomme...kpacking-gear/

And the websites of the apps usually have instructions too.

I use a similar thing as Glenn, got from supercheap, and also has a USB plug.
I wired a mini lighted rocker switch in too, from jaycar.
I found with no switch it flattened the battery, as it is wired direct with fuse.
Works awesome, is ip61 water rated.
Been on bike over 12 months, pressured washed and is still like new.
Cheers
Kim

I tried the airplane mode the other day, that worked well, but I ride a alot by myself and I use bluetooth earplugs so I can ring the missus or she can ring me incase of emergency etc.

On my XR600 , No Battery, I have a cig lighter socket just wired into the light loom before the switch, and run the GPS from it for Geocaching, works great no problems with the unit running straight from the motor.
