Crappy speedo drive

The cheaply built expensive to replace speedo drive on my 450x has stripped out the plastic gear so rather than keep replacing these things every second time i do a half decent mono does anyone know a better option such as magnetic pickup like KTM etc. that can be easily fashioned to my Honda. The cunning buggers wont just sell the plastic gear either.

I got a trailtech vapor from ebay from the US $150

Sold my 450X speedo (3700k's) on ebay for $100

Just before me, someone sold their speedo (1000k's) for about $250

I'd suggest not to buy the bike that the second speedo went on.

With a bit of luck you'll find a Honda parts guy like Gwylim at Moorooka Yamaha. As far as Yamaha are concerned, their speedo drives are non-rebuildable, and somehow Gwylim managed to come up with the individual part number (5BF-25135-01). Been through a few of them now. Much better at $12.00 rather than $80.00. Same issue. The bigger wheelies tend to do a speedo drive in.

hi paul

the 2008 models use a pick up off the rear disc and just have wheel spacers on the front - dont know what the new speedos are worth dollar wise but am sure they can be retro fitted.

if it was me i would try to borrow one of those plastic gears (maybe from donnas bike) and then get one machined up from alloy at an engineering shop, due to the fact that a new plastic gear probably will also break.

The thing that looks like a bolt with the wires coming out is the pickup. The magnet is on the left on the triangle shaped bracket. If your drive is just running 2 little wires you should be able to change to this setup. Find who sells acewell speedo's.

Here's a couple of photos of my plastic gear. I just replaced one recently, and unlike me, I actually tossed the old one out then. Old parts usually sit on a shelf for at least two years here. Murphy's Law. With a bit of luck your's will be the same.

Thanks Mark,
Nice try but it couldn't be that easy could it.
Mine isn't as wide across the teeth but larger diameter where it drives of the hub, handy.
I'll try honda again and see if the can look a little harder in the parts book.
Thanks Paul

Thanks Paul

I was wondering why my speedo failed a little while ago,

New cable didn't fix it,
Pulling the Speedo drive gear out however did show a chewed up bit of plastic

I understand now why it failed,
Must be a bit of a jolt when the front wheel starts turning again.

I might have to lay off the wheelies a bit
