Question Bushings V Bearings ?

I dont know if this topic has been discussed anyhow ...

I am rebuilding another 1985 KDX200. The swingarm roller bearings are worn. Basic setup is Roller Bearing -> Bush -> axle and some seals on each end.

I have the skills to make my own custom bushes using phosphorus bronze and will delete the roller bearings. The end result will be Axle going into bush.

Has anyone tried this? Any opinions?

Are you going to press fit the bushings into the swingarm?

There is a company in the states that uses a plastic bushing instead of roller bearings.

I imagine the result will be very similar to other applications where bearing vs bushing comes up. Bushing a bit more resilient and requires less maintenance, however trade off being it won't be quite as smooth; more friction to overcome.

Yes, and the axle will be a tight sliding fit.

Might add I also have a lead based grease, apparently very hard to obtain these days.

XR 500 has plastic bushes.
No wear since 1981.
I'd be looking at Delrin or similar. Needs to run on a hardened surface such as the inner for the needle bearings.
I wouldn't run a plain bearing on a bolt.

Hi Von, Ive done the same thing with a PE400 Im building.
Phosphor Bronze Bushes pressed into the swing arm.
The axle/bolt itself was very worn so I welded it up and turned it to the required diameter
Haven't completed the build however I have no doubt the bushing alternative will work really well.
Cheers
