Warning To All Bike Sellers And Buyers

Spoke to a bloke yesterday here in Adelaide who had his bike "stolen" on the weekend. He was paid with a conterfeite bank cheque, the cheque looked like the real thing the only difference was the ABN number on it,apparently these guys got four bikes in 48 hours and insurance will not cover the theft. His bike is a KTM 06 450 SX the police suspect these bikes are going interstate so be carefull when selling and buying a seconhand late model dirt bike.

These days I wouldn't take a cheque for anything. So many people are getting ripped off. We nearly lost a great deal of money selling hay. The guys cheque bounced when he took the first load and he was coming back for the other lot. Turned up with a cheque after we asked for cash. He ended up paying the cash with alot of words that shouldn't be said on here.

I would suggest getting cash or getting a BSB transfer and making sure the money is in the account/hand before handing anything over.

I would never accept a personal cheque but you would have thought a bank cheque would have been safe. you can always ask for ID like a driver license and confirm Identity, or even say you like a photo of the bike and its new owner.. that should make them think twice..

Poor bloke.

As for myself, I don't let anything out of my possession until cheques are cleared and I really DO have the money.

working in pubs for years you would be surprised how often they bounce

they can be ordered from bank then cancelled b4 being drawn

they can be stolen

or in this can be fake

An alternative would be to perhaps issue a receipt, keep your bike in your possesion & contact or head down to the purchasers Bank (local branch) with the cheque.

For both personal & bank cheques, most banks are able to provide you with what's called a 'special clearance answer', there is a fee involved ($20..$30), only should take about 30 minutes, atleast you then have the peace of mind that the cheque is going to get presented & he's good for the money & you can safely hand over your pride & joy.

If they are not crooks & are serious about buying your bike, this wouldnt be a problem or inconvienence for most people you would think ?

anything like that, should get the guys drivers licence? check the picture and get him to write all his licence details on the back of the check, thats what i did to buy my bike, but 90% was cash anyway... just a thought.

Big Bummer though hope they catch the PRicks
