Kayaba SSS for Beta

After deciding to keep the red beast, I thought I would investigate upgrading the front fork. The oc's are fine for what they are but I have read great reviews of SSS forks fitted to Beta RR models. I saw a pair for sale & got them pretty cheap - off a '09 YZ-f 250. A big thank you to Marty Moose (DBW & betarider) for laying out the conversion steps so plainly.

My brother helped remove a seized axle pinch bolt yesterday & I could tell when I picked up the forks they probably had been caned, so I was expecting the worse when I had a squiz inside.

I tore the the left leg down this arvo. I had never seen inside a cc fork before. Mmm-kay, here goes..

Free piston's shagged - o-ring & spacer split. The oil & dust seals and the circlip were rooted, too. Slider chrome a-ok, all other internals look good ats, including bushings. Pretty happy with that. I measured the spring, too - the stock (AUS delivered) spring rate was 0.459 so very close to what I have now in the Sachs @ 0.46.

Question - is there a difference between an oem placcy free piston & after market one (I would do the drill mod to a new oem one if i went that way)?

Note gate latch rod holder - works a treat!

If you can spring for them get the skf green seals, much nicer action and way less stiction, Teknik is where I got my alloy free pistons from, though just recently they were out of stock. But they did have the plastic variety that you can just drill anyway.
The oem ones are ok but can shatter over time and with overly soft valving when used on mx/sx with sharp bottoming. Alloy ones are fit and forget.
Silverfox, if you put a known weight on a spring and measure the movement you get the spring rate.. E.g 0.5kg/mm so 500 grams will compress the spring one mm.

And I don't think your spacer is split, they are supposed to be like that, and if you are drilling them you can move the upper o-ring down to the bottom anyway. Are the free pistons cracked at all?

Yes, Nate - brake leg free piston cracked, other one fine. I have some aluminum ones coming from RMATV with a fork seal kit. May as well replace all the bushings, too, so I've got a new fork.

The fork isn't off an 09 as advertised - the corresponding Braking 260mm hanger (POW106) doesn't fit. So after some sleuthing, I deduced it must be 05 (first year of SSS on YZ-f) or 06. 07 & up is the new smaller caliper bracket (POW13 only fits 02-06). MXstore will swap it, no dramas.

Also, was just at JPG's cos the rh leg comp valve was seized in the fork staunchion.

First, air gun on it - won't budge. Next, heat gun & leccy rattle gun - won't budge. Finally the big mains power impact driver - he reckons it was well over 100Nm. It was rattling my friggin' teeth out!

All dissassembled & ready to service. Main structural parts are all good - no threaded/shagged out components. Based on the colour/consistency of the oil in the inner cart, I doubt it's seen daylight for 9 years!

I still need someone to reduce the larger (56mm) od upper staunchion area to 54mm so she fits in the triples. Nate, have a squiz at the last picture in post #1, that's the larger area that need to be machined down. Lathe?

Not worried about shims, etc yet. Rebuild, put 'em on & ride then assess.

Not a bad idea but as they are off a YZ you may find them a bit harsh particularly in slower rocky stuff, at least that's what I've found the few times I've ridden my YZ125 in the bush. Guess it depends how hard you hit stuff and type of terrain , you may love them as is. Sounds like a good little project anyhow.

2005 were AOSS not SSS
Smaller brake caliper bracket came in 2008, so could be 06 or 07 SSS

1C35-R & 1C35-L are the markings on the fork feet. There are no individual part numbers for these in the fiche that I could see, only complete legs, which makes it hard (as described on other forums) to accurately date the fork.

SSS were first fitted to YZ-f250's in 05 or 06 I believe and the smaller caliper hanger was fitted from 07 or 08.

The Braking POW106 (07- on their website) part doesn't fit, as I have the larger bracket, so we are prolly 06. POW13 is on it's way.

They were sold to me as 09 - clearly incorrect.

Haven't got to the bottom of "which axle" yet - have snaffled an 08 one for $20 but I think based on my luck so far, it'll be the wrong one!
