Got a 2000 model in the shed I,m the Second owner.

I put RM usd forks and rear shock in it and wrecked it for tight single track work. the original suspension just soaks up everything at the lower speeds and gets good traction, quick steerer too.. Not as good now though. The RMX motor will chug all day or hit band and go, very smooth controllable power.

Trouble is my TM just has more grin factor and turns and handles just as good, the more so when you push it harder.

Thought about the RMX motor in the TM but wouldn't do it, they,re 2 different styles of bike.

Just ride the TM most of the time.

Good luck with it a well set up RMX well ridden will not disappoint.

I've had a 2000 model for 6 years and are only now looking to upgrade to a 2t 300. They're great and although I haven't ridden a newer 2T, I'd love to keep mine as a second bike, or for bikeless mates. Never breaks down and gets dropped and mistreated in the mud quite a bit. Just dont have the coin to keep 2 bikes. All it needs is the suspension done as it hasn't even had a suspension service in that time, and could also do with harder springs for my lardarse.

A well setup one should keep up with most bikes in the bush. Suspension setup for your weight if you are over 80kg, and PWK38 carby being the important mods.

I'd also add modern foot pegs and a braided line for the front brake to the list, but the rest seems fine for most guys on a budget and/or not too fast

Again I haven't ridden a modern 2T, but its still more nimble than most modern 450 4T's I've ridden

I had a new 2000 model and I must say It's the best value bang for my buck I've ever had from a bike. 6K new and on the road with a free Factory FX sticker kit and seat cover.

Rode it at least 4 times a week for over 5 years. Min 100ks each ride, some as much as 250ks. Changed the piston and rings once but didn't need to and broke one clutch cable. She was almost bullet proof.

I had a full pro-circuit system on it with a Whipps Alloy pipe guard along with a heap of other after market parts. It was a great bike .

I liked the frame Yellow on yours but stone chips etc would stand out more as well I suppose.

All the mods listed above get my tick of approval. These are a very under rated dirt bike. Here is a list of things that I have done to my old RMX I dont ride it much but I will never sell it, its just one of those Iconic bikes bit like the modern IT250. In the right hands in single track they will keep any of the newer bikes Honest.
HD Tubes
Techniks Gold valves and service of Suspension
Heavier Springs front and back
Machined the handle bar Mounts off Tig welded the back of the top triple clamp and re-drilled to allow 1"1/8 Reikon Fat bars to be fitted and also a steering damper
removed Headlight and tail lights replaced with much lighter units
toss the speedo and electrical switches etc
Pro circuit pipe and a custom made muffler a FMF turbine Core works well also
Carbon Fibre pipe Guard
Alloy bash plate
checked the squish and adjusted to 1.3mm
V-force reeds
PWK 38 air striker Carb
Twin Air Filters
Venhill feather light throttle and clutch cables
DRZ 400 Kick starter.
New sticker kit
Need to add braided brake lines front and back and would like to make up some Rad guards
Ive had the engine completly rebuilt so I am slowly putting her back together as we speak.

probably their only shortfall compared to new bikes is that they are a bit heavy and the ergos are a bit dated.

Top notch project, great bike, In the perfect world where they ADR,d the 450, and started building a modern, 2 stroke rego,d RMX, they would sell an easy tonne. Ride with a few blokes who still use these, no problem hanging with the new stuff all day, best of luck with it.

cheers

From a circa 1998 Dirt Action magazine:

I still have my 2000 model that I bought new.
