Some insurance companies will cover this type of theft if you get some ID from the buyer. Below is an excerpt from the PDS from QBE.


When You Are Not Insured For Theft Or Damage To Your Bike

5.1.3 when the theft is by a person to whom you have lent your bike, but this will not apply if the incident is theft by deception and you have kept the driving licence or other form of legal identification of that person;

For example, when you permit the use of your bike by a friend or a prospective buyer who ends up stealing your bike.

Bloody insurance companies are the biggest thieves there is.
Agree though that he did everything wrong. Especially with an expensive road bike, it's easy to attract thieves.
