Flemmings right hand rule for generators, it shows the relationships between directions of motion, flux and field.

Is the stator part in a bike alternator the permanent magnets, hence why you can't get that rewound?
More study Ian The magnets are part of the electrical system, they can therefore only be the 'field'

Nope, that's the 'screw rule' for solenoids...

Nope, thumb is Direction of rotation, pointer is Direction of main field flux, tallman is Direction of output current. BUT. because the main field changes every 1/2 rev from North to South pole, the output is AC. You can't easily use Flemmings rule on AC machines

It's specialist trade work LT, a 4 year apprenticeship. It looks easy but isn't.

Copying a winding isn't hard as long as you copy it accurately and use the correct equipment. Winding wire and epoxy varnish can only be bought in bulk, then it has to bake in a special oven. Setting up to do it is a PITA given how little work it generates.

what limits rotational speed on a series DC motor ?

is there a limit ?

a question which requires a little more understanding of the theory than what wiki can provide; what does the capacitor in an AC (capacitor start) motor do, and how does it do this, and what vector leads ?

I have a basic understanding. I was referring to your statement:

"Finally, no-one gets a 'stator' rewound![/B] The two electrical parts down there are an armature winding and a pulser coil..."

If the stator was the permanent magnets as I enquired, this would satisfy that statement.

But I just had a look inside and the part that doesn't move (the stator) is in fact the armature. As far as I'm concerned the armature and stator in my alternator are one and the same. Therefore it makes sense to 'get the stator rewound'

Sideshow, nice work, it cost me about 200 dollars when I got mine rewound.

I have another question. Why does that one coil indicated by the screwdriver have way less windings than all the others? Was it a Friday afternoon job or what?

And why is the one next to it insulated like that, and not the others?

I can change a fuse or a globe, anything more than that with electrics is black magic as far as I'm concerned. I'm mechanically minded, (a Fitter Machinist by trade) but the finer points of electrickery is something that has always eluded me. Even though Dad was a sparky, and a colour blind one at that.

Keep these threads coming Nutty, I might eventually be able to absorb something.

The insulated one is the igniter (pulser coil), it provides power to the coil to create spark.

I once rewound the (whatever) on my old 350 so that the headlight was brighter than a candle.

XR 350 that is.
A bike that I was once told didn't exist.

The pole with less windings on it Ian is like that because, as Nutty stated in the first part of his post, voltage= strength of magnetic field x number of windings x rpm

Every workshop should have a jar of this stuff. Electrical wires are full of smoke and when things stop working you can often see the smoke escaping. Just do a quick refill and Bob's your uncle.
