Ktm 500 regulator wire corrosion or undersize

The run relay voltage contact on my regulator has failed which left me stranded last week. Initially I thought it was the fuel pump had failed(the engine was cranking but not getting priming from pump). But it was the ECU not powering up.
I also found this wiring, possibly the cause? My thoughts are Electrolysis, Corrosion or overheating(creating corrosion)
It's isolated to just the ground(-ve) pin & wire on a 4 pin plug and my friends bike initially appears to have the same issue.
Interestingly the black cable is 1.8mm2 and the brown is 0.9mm2.

Interested if anyone else's 500/450/350 is the same.

This is the ground wire from the regulator, the black wire to socket/pin back to the main earth.

Those wires aren't exposed to the sun whilst the bike sits in a shed/garage by any chance?

The bike gets no direct sun while in the garage, the plug was tucked behind the frame too.
Got a theory?
