Which 2017 KTM

Well the bodies healed up and I had my first ride on the weekend. Now it's time to upgrade to some new steads.

Looking like i'm going to be back on a KTM, now I've just got to decide which one.

Key thing I need is that all/most parts are interchangeable between the 2 models and electric start for the enduro model due to my hip issues kick starting a bike from a hands on head start is pretty tough for me to get it right consistently and there is nothing worse than being stuck at the back of the pack as once i lose touch with those couple of front guys i never see them again.

Coming off having the 15 YZ250FX and the 15 YZ250F i really loved the 250 4T's. They are pretty easy to ride and handle well. Cost of ownership was very low as i didn' have to do anything to it other than add the bash plate, rad guards and a stepped seat and change the springs. Didn't need to touch the valving on either bikes, its was sufficiently good in stock form on both bikes. I cant fault the 250F in any way but i can fault the 250FX as a race bike and it simply came down to the gearing and the weight of the flywheel. It was a bit lazy off the bottom and the way it was geared made 2nd gear pretty useless as it was simply too low and made it pretty much useless even after changing sprocket sizes. I definitely preferred the snappy feel of the MX'r and even the gearing was better for racing.

They both handled like a dream so i can't fault them there but it's come time to get back onto a KTM so which way do i go...

I put my 125 back together to sell to the next door neighbour and through a leg over it and took it for a ride just making sure it was running well and i was loving the having the 2t pinned.

This had me leaning to a 250XC and 250SX but they dont make a 250xc and the SX is not electric start, given that I'm a distributor for lithium batteries it really needs to have electric start to justify my tax deductions. So a 300XC with a 250SX. This is an option i'm toying with.

Now im thinking almost the status quo of the 250XCF and the 250SXF or maybe even 2 x 250SXF's. It's the class i prefer to race in, i keep my same race number and i get my electric start.

So now it's time to talk me into or out of it.

Why do people buy a new bike, throw money at it, get in setup to their liking, sell it and start again? Is it too much money, keeping up with the Jones or it better and faster? I just don't understand why.

KTM make 250xc's I know bolton's have sold at least one 2017. Or get a 300 and put a 250 topend on it, you will always sell the 300 topend easy. Thats what I was going to do, but have fallen in love with the 300.

It's a pity you missed the dirt days yesterday. Perfect opportunity to test all the range. In stock form the huskies were more refined than the Katos in my opinion. I enjoyed the 350 and the 300. I was impressed with the 450 and 501 too

I think one of each should cover it. The tx300 and fx350 were nice too, the air forks were a little firm form me though

You obviously haven't bought one of my second hand bikes before have you. : violent-s: violent-s

Tax dodging, it's a genuine tax deductible expense and they well and truly rape me for more than my fare share of tax that's for sure. If im tax dodging i'm sure as hell not doing a good job of it. I single handedly support an immigrant family of 10. And when i need urgent surgery they send me through private health just because i have private health insurance but it still ends up costing me 3k instead of nothing (even though i've tipped in more than my fare share in tax already) because the tightarses don't even cover a gap fee!

I get a little bit touchy about the amount of tax hard working Aussies have to pay so that others can sit on their arse and do nothing.

I used to think the same thing too. I couldn't understand how people justified the expense until i got a new bike myself. There is nothing like that new bike feeling and knowing that every nut and bolt is where it should be and it is the correct one with the same size bolt heads etc. I ride 2 -3 times a week and thats makes it easy to justify.

I've been blown away at how good my 350EXC has been this year.

I've done everything on it from MX to cross country and it never ceases to amaze me how it can keep a 450 honest on a long MX straight, revs to the moon or slugs around when I'm lazy and is still nimble in the tight stuff.

It puts my YZ450 to shame in every aspect other than outright top end grunt, but I never ride it up there anyway.

There is an XCF version available in the 2017 if you want the sit between an MX bike and a bush basher too.

One things for sure, you're spoilt for choice with what's available from the orange stable. They're even available in white and blue too
