Drz 250
I was looking for a bike that my 15 year old son could learn to ride on . I found a 2010 Drz 250 with hardly a scratch on it - one lady owner - cheap as chips .
I was kind of thinking I could ride it on some trail rides as well if he doesn't use it and on the road occasionally . It is a bit heavy for him but I think he will manage . I couldn't help myself and I am now wondering how I can improve the performance enough to lift the front wheel more easily . ( its almost impossible) Mainly for logs and the like . I downloaded a useful uncorking guide and have done some tweaks which have helped but not enough. https://djebel-club.ru/_ld/0/32_How_to_Uncork_T.pdf Ive opened the airbox slightly and cleaned up the restriction weld inside the exhaust manifold . Opened up the exhaust end cap slightly with some more holes and richened the idle mixture slightly . Changed front sprocket from a 14 to a 13 so its 13 /42 . May get a 47 rear . I had a 97 model which I could get the front wheel up a lot more easily from memory . It did have a staintune exhaust but I wonder if this makes much difference Has anyone modified one of these ? They say in the guide to up on the pilot and main jets Is it worth trying richer jets now it may be flowing more freely ? I don't really like going richer - without a reason . Runs well . Plug looked ok will check again after some harder riding . I think it suggests to from 127 to a 140 main and a 37.5 to a 40 pilot |

Ife often fantasized about building up one of these bikes. Following with interest!

I'd gear it down more, get it out and see what top speed is, then gear it back to 90k.
Cheers Kim

We took the bikes up to Glen Echo a while back .
I didn't ride the drz much but I was a bit shocked by the rear suspension going around the track - sooo soft . The front end seems to be hard to control too - kept washing out It was quite good on the trails though and the soft suspension is nice at times. I guess the aim was to have a bike for the son to ride so that's cool . He was mainly riding around the flat track but was able to do a bit of a trail loop. I ve put a better front tyre on it now hoping that the tyre was part of the issue . Ive put on some decent bark busters and some twin wall renthals replace the big steel bars . I also fitted bar risers that allowed the thicker bars to fit on . It should feel less cramped now . I fitted a light weight battery as the old one was stuffed. The foot pegs are on the list to go too - they are real narrow It does need a bigger rear sprocket so that's next . Hopefully we can get out again soon for a decent ride The lovely new looking tank stickers got wrecked first ride when it was dropped a couple of times - oh well 21103759_10155592366525480_1537414526_o.jpg |

Ok yawn - so I thought id post up some progress for anyone that bored.
So I put on a 48 rear sprocket . New sprocket bolts as old ones were soft as crap and too tight . New chain - old one hadn't been off the bike in 3000k and 7 years. Was almost seized up - reckon Ive gained 1 hp ![]() New hi flo filter . Greased the suspension. Changed oil and filter . I like the air box access design on these bikes - simple and easy to use . Also like the little plastic toolbox but not sure if I will leave it on Leaving massive indicators on for now - for dual sport use. Preload on max Decent gritty tyre on the back Ridden it to work a couple of times and it feels good on the road Right to go and see what its like finally 21458682_10155632057730480_195300098_o.jpg |

thanks/ yeh I heard the tank actually holds 12 litres and the range can be 200 ks depending on terrain .
Starting to think about a rack and some short adventure riding . I don't think my young fella would mind ... |

Good report. Many years ago my first road registered bike was a 1983 Suzuki DR250Z.
It was the white Enduro model with long travel suspension and Full Floater stickers on the swingarm. It was a great little bike and a great introduction to trail riding but it didn't have a lot of grunt. I would love to ride a modern day one to see the difference between them. I even once raced MX on it in the 4 stroke class at Bilpin MX track. But the bike (and I) weren't quite up to it and got beaten by some bloke called Ballard on a XR250. He even lapped me. A few times . |

I remember the ad for those on TV - the army one with the guy jumping the truck ? well known Suzuki mxer of the time on it - Beatie?
Havent seen too many bike adds on TV since then This ones not really modern though - this bike is pretty much the same as the 98 one I had - plastic tank is main difference. That's probably why I like it . Oil cooled . It doesn't seem to go as well as the 98 did so that's the only thing that's a little disappointing but I will work on that . I don't expect too much but just a bit more power to get the front wheel off the ground would be nice . ![]() |

Mate had an earlier model DR250, around 2000ish model. He rode the wheels off it even commuting 50 odd km on it at times. But yeah not the most powerful thing, XR or TT would eat it for breakfast power wise.
