All the owners handbooks that I have (wr450f - 2012; 2016; 2017; yz450f 2018) use the term "replace as required".
Only inspection is required @ 12.5 hours.
Valve clearance inspection is every 12.5 hours on a yz450f & 30.0 hours on a wr450f.
This would also relate to competition use & maintaining peak performance.

Just checked a 2017 YZ250F handbook.
Same recommendations ; i.e. inspect @ 12.5 hours, replace as required.

I'm eyeing off the' 20 wr250f but there's no reviews out yet. What's your thoughts on the 450?
I to have a owned 2012 WR450F and it was the biggest pile of junk I've ever owned, I stepped back into a 250F after a series accident and loved it, buying the 450 was a case of what i felt like on the day haha, I'm yet to ride the 450 as I'm still waiting on radiator guards, pipe etc but will let you know as soon as i get a decent ride on it

I have seen a Yamaha buliten to dealers for the 2019 yz250f, stating 12.5 is recommended replacment time. A few people have had issues with the chain derailing or breaking after the guide or tensioner have failed or broken.
I had 166hrs on my 2015 wr250f and no problems but change pistons at 80hrs all good. I picked up a 2016 yz250fx with 28hrs very cheap and swapped motors with my 166hr WR engine. That way i kept my full rego off the WR. At 50hrs on the FX engine i put a 270 Cylinder Works kit in for a bit more bottom end torque. I have 30hrs so far no problems.
