Recently my local Bottlo upgraded their shopping trolleys and the new ones are locked together inside the shop. They need a $1 or $2 coin to unlock them and the coin is returned when you replace the trolley and lock it up again.
Now this pissed me off enormously, I almost never have any coins in my pocket and previously I always returned the trolley to the bay outside the shop when I'd finished with it.
So I studied the locking mechanism and did some research and made my own key out of a bit of PVC conduit flattened out.

The round end is the same diameter as a $2 coin. Normally when a coin is inserted it releases a piece of metal attached to a chain and also some retainers close around the coin to stop it being pulled out. The cut out bits on my key allow it to be removed once the trolley is unlocked.
Apparently Aldi (and others) have the same trolleys and Aldi sell a token the same size as a $1 coin for this purpose. You can also buy removable keys on Ebay but they're made out of steel and add extra weight and bulk to the keyring. My key took me a few minutes to make and cost nothing.
I've used it a few times and each time when I've finished with the trolley I have given it to a new arrival in the car park as they're heading inside so I feel like I'm doing a good turn.

**** that. I did that for about 45 years and this is much more fun than going to go to work and put up with ******s all day.
Normally I ride a few times a week but it's too hot atm. Bring on winter

That's thinking! Bottle opener and trolley theft device all in one..

FFS really what's the world coming to. A coin to take a trolley that you get back? If you wanted a trolley a dollar is a fair price anyway! Time is money.. what are the trolley boys paid for again?

I have always used shopping trolleys as prams for the kids.. works out heaps cheaper! Tightarse tip #5

But I like to drop spare screws from bottom of my pocket down there to jam them up good and properly 🙂
