yeah, I had a few posts in that thread too
I'd be very hesitant to correlate a massive improvement in ease of starting to a lowering of octane, without then going back to a litre or two of the premium to confirm it wouldn't start again.

... maybe we've stumbled onto a secret 'insert comspiracy theory here' ... and we've uncovered an incidious plot (to do 'what' i'm not sure?).
- anyway, if some creedence does indeed unfold from this discovery at least we can say that we pointed 'them' in the right direction to begin looking ...

I picked up a bike a while ago for next to nothing.... hard to start, ran like a pig, and the owner after spending a small fortune on it and taking it to a couple of different mechanics finally gave up and sold it to me in disgust.

Anyway I stuck a wire coathanger down the ports and discovered the two side ones were blocked right where you couldn't see. Unblocked them and it goes like a rocket.

Wonder if its a similar thing with your motor.

The plug looks way too rich to me. Also when carbon builds up like that and is oily and doesn't want to stick to the head it means it is running way to cold.

A 380 is not and easy bike to keep on the power all the time to keep heat into them so you run them fairly lean from the pilot through the needle.

Lean it right off for one ride and check the plug. If you are worried pop the head after and have a look after.

I've run it in all manner of states in the early throttle settings - it is a tricky balance between decel surging and pinging, and running too rich. Generally I've run it with a bit of surge and close to pinging under sustained 1/4 throttle, but the plug has always looked like that, even when way too lean.

Charlie you have to remember that your powervalve was closed.
(cause's a lot of low jetting issues)
When you put it back together I believe you will have to start
the jetting all over again .Make sure the powervalves are all fitted
properly(have seen them not) make sure "Z" is right and go from there.

most of my fiddling with the engine / jetting has been with the powervalve in a 100% working state - am unsure as to the extent of side port operation in recent times, as the actuator couldn't really come off the rod (even though the bolt came out) because of the side cover. I would have expected to notice a sudden decrease in power somewhere. But we'll have a better idea shortly
Z measures up perfectly and all the dots are lined up.

not sure, going to check clearance again before reassembly, but z measures fine. A few posts on ktmtalk have suggested that a light skimming may not be unusual... I dunno.

Then try leaning out the main as it is definetly too rich and running cold!
