Front wheel bearings....

When I was washing the bike yesterday I noticed a little free play in the front wheel, so I took the wheel off to inspect the bearings and sure enough one side as a small amount of free play and is a little notchy when you turn it. Question is firstly how hard are they to remove? Would it be worth investing in a bearing remover of some sort, secondly can i just take the old bearing to a bearing shop and getting them to match it?

Thanks in advance
Dan
