for future reference to others who may have this problem

the replacement stator turned up today, it is wired the same as the first hence the bike runs backwards. To get it to run forwards swap the white wire with the white/red strip wire. Will tin forwards after you do that assuming your bike has the standard wiring loom like mine does.

this is the seller i got the stators from

I had an early (1986) Ktm 300 do this to me. The stator crapped itself, got it rewound. Fitted it back to the bike. Next ride out started the bike not realising it was running backwards, walked away to pull on my gear, kickstarter gear bound up (from it running backwards) and smashed the cases.

very interesting!

these are the wires on the little pulse coil right bowser ?

my bikes kokusan igns have a very complicated set up to detect reverse rotation which makes starting the bike backwards impossible... even if some idiot puts a coil in upside down

i had a coil upside down in that new cover i made .. no spark becasue the ECU thought the engine was turning over backwards, when i flipped the wires on the pulse coil i got a spark but it was max advance at starting rpm .. backfired and broke the kickstart lever
