If you want it to handle whoops better and be better overall there are gains to be made. They have a few issues std.

Welcome Andrew,

I am lucky in that I get to ride other Beta's from time to time and I always prefer my suspension set up by a long way.

As to what to tell Terry, he will ask all relevant questions, and give him as much info on the type of riding your speed etc.

It will be money well spent.

be interesting to know how they tweaked the suspension. the guys at FFRC put my 2015 RR300 suspension through their dyno and said the rear shock was one of the best they'd seen, but while the forks were good they could definitely be improved on.

the changes for the 2016 models seem good to me as the RR480 forks are working well, but keen to see how they look on the dyno and if there's room for improvement still.

They are good compared to others the Honda is rubbish for example. The Beta wallows in stock form, lacks high speed rebound. On big whoops its just plain to soft.

CHAPTER 4

Beta 390 RR 2015

119 hours 3500kms
Replaced left rear wheel bearing and both axle seals.

125 hrs 3625kms
Top end rebuilt as the engine was using oil.
Factory recommends new top end at 90 hrs
New piston kit. 4 New valve guide seals also

I ordered the 2016 piston as it has a different oil scraper ring. And Because there was no 2015 piston kits in Australia despite the web site saying they were available.

I believe 350 and 390 which share the same piston, have the oil ring changed again for 2017.
2015 have a 3 part oil ring
2016, 2017 are 2 part oil ring
Inside the engine everything was like new no wear evident anywhere.

I also changed 2 valve shims although the gaps were still within specification I bought them back to the higher end of specification so hopefully I will not need to change the shims for a long time.
I also made a note of all the shim sizes while it was apart.

Special tool to replace valve collets.

You have to remove the engine from the frame to remove the head and barrel
IMG_7544.jpg
New spark plug.
New rear brake pads.
Put new ethyl glycol mix in the radiator
Pleased to report that there is now normal oil usage and I don’t have to top it up between rides anymore.

I was bored and decided to make a Linkage guard I did note there was not one scratch on the bottom of the shock after 125 hrs. but hey ya never know when it will require a little protection.

To be continued….

How was the wear on the piston Jallopy ? Was hoping to get 150hrs from my 350 before a top end. Engine out of the frame sucks at least the plug will be easy to get out

Hi Marty there was nil wear on the piston.
Ok just a tiny bit of coating worn off the front of the piston.

Front of piston
You can still see perfect machine marks on the piston above the top ring to the crown.

CHAPTER 5

137hours 4000kms.
New Engine Ice coolant back in.
New rear brake pads

140 hrs 4060kms
Pirelli front tyre m 32 mid soft with tublis 9psi
Fork air bleeders now fitted.

Rear shock removed from my Beta 390 RR, strip and clean and replace oil.
I used Motul 5wt light expert and regased it to 150psi with my push bike pump.
Reset the sag a little firmer to about 105
Clickers standard.
Must be all right as the next ride I got back to the utes and realized I had not given the shock a second thought all day.

Here are the tools and spares I carry on the bike.
Had to make a bigger pouch to hold the extras in the original spot under the side cover.
I dont carry any spares or tools in my backpack anymore.
IMG_7652.jpg

I modified the end of the spark plug spanner to take a 13mm spanner without the top collapsing when turned.
IMG_7650.jpg
I have a spare piece of hose and a metal joiner to go inside any hose.
2 spare hose clamps are carried around the radiator hose now on the bike.
IMG_7654.jpg

Side stand modification.
IMG_7657.jpg
Made up a pouch to hold my digital tire gauge where it can be easily accessed

Beta RR 390
IMG_7659.jpg

I have only cracked the front guard so far and have a new spare for when it snaps off, All other plastic is fine and not broken.

There you have it.... 4000kms and the bike still brings a smile to my face every time I ride it.

With arguably the best motor in the Beta range, and the suspension sorted to suit where and how I ride, that just leaves me free to pick the lines (But thats another story)
