2001 wr 250

Gday lads,

Just looking at purchasing a 2001 wr250, it looks in good nick for its age and is the right price($1500), has good compression and everything works... just need to rec reg ot and good to go...
Just wondering if there us anything to look out for and any common issues? Id love a newer bike but just cant justify spending too much on a bike i will only ride evey now and then

Looks to be a good base for a project bike
Be prepared for some tinkering and you will be surprised how capable it can be

My suggestions here are widely generic for all bikes.
Any/the expensive fixes need-be prioritively sussed.

Run/blip the engine with the oil-filler cap off... observe/smell gasses.
Shove the blunt end of a screw driver in your ear... ala stethoscope.

As implied: There will be issues: It's far preferable those being minor.
Therefore you should focus your sussing re. finding any major issues.

If the air-filter is dirty & in poor condition... It implies a lazy/inept owner.
Look for those sorta-signs which indicate a bastard seeking to dupe you.

I'd check & ensure it's not stolen nor financially encumbered.
I'd take a photo of the bloke's Driver's License via my phone.

I'd get a Signed Bill of Sale & compare his Licence Signature.
I'd stipulate electronic direct payment into his bank account.

batesy: I've adapted every bike I've owned (>10) to my personal will:
Controls are one of the most personal interactions any rider can have.

I ride with my foot over my gear-lever rather than below it.
The rib-sole part of my boot changes-up gears... It works?

I don't ever put my foot under the gear-lever... Why would I?
I'm fine with people trying/riding my bike.. Steep/trying curve.

Make sure it's not stolen. Check for dodgy numbers or any interference. Re-sprayed frame with poorly stamped numbers. It's a 2T right? Make sure you see it cold and ride it till hot. Clutch drag/take up works ok. No Piston slap. Load up every gear. Kick, counter shaft and gear splines aren't ****ed. No clunking forks or shock. Damaged chrome. Weird sized bolts and nuts everywhere instead of factory ones. Cracks in frame/sub near joins. Evidence of chain damage around counter shaft. Pull the air filter off and hopefully see nothing other than some 2t oil and air. No dust/grit/pieces of air filter... Bent/damaged brake calipers or masters. Other than these really annoying and expensive issues, you should be fine

Yeah same up to last year in 2014. Just ebay WR300 gear shift/shifter. Heaps available cheap. Same motor. Yours should have the proper WR 'box too.
