As uncomfortable as it may be to many, Hairy One has a point somewhat. Movies and other forms of entertainment have documented and even glorified theft (Oceans 11?), be it fictional or re-enacted.
I saying stealing is wrong and the perpetrators are scum. They can also be good at what they do or even clever, which in a bizarre way is admirable. At least if someone (Authorities?) takes interest and learns from them we can all protect ourselves and our possessions better.
It's a shame now that authorities in some cases protect the guilty so beating the sh!t out of them in your back yard results in charges laid against the victim....

I remember seeing that one on the news years ago, I think there was a heap of brand new beemers in those containers.

Isnít there some maritime law where itís free game when stuff falls off ships? Or am I an idiot?

Possibly both

I read somewhere that in NSW you can legally keep jetsam both not flotsam or beached items. That was when a container ship lost a heap of boxes off Newy and the local lads started opening the boxes on the beach, only to be nicked by the Coppers.

Finding a BMW meh, their electrics are ordinary in normal use, a salted one would need some loving.

You might be confusing maritime law with the wharfies code that "Anything on the wharf is fair game"

Yep, that's what happened in Newy. Lloyds claimed the flotsam was theirs because they'd paid out on it. I recall some looters were charged.

I see a ship lost about 300 containers on 1-2 January & a dozen or so have landed on the Dutch coastline, so if you are looking for some my little Ponies or Ikea furniture your in luck. The authorities have said some containers may have Toxic chemicals in them ?
