You can but... The new engine design is superior. The old one dates back to 1997.
My 2008 125EXC had a 150 big bore kit from TSP. I only put it on for 1 ride before I sold it and I was impressed but it isn't recommended to go for the oversized bore only as it doesn't leave much room to the powervalve.
You can pick up factory cranks and cylinders fairly cheaply if you are patient as they pop up on Gumtree and Ebay fairly frequently.
The 125 worked surprisingly well in the bush the only problem I had was on hills where I couldn't build enough momentum at the base. I loved it in slippery conditions as it built power smoothly until it got on the pipe and wheel placement was so easy. I'm 75kg.

I went to a 12 200 thinking it would be like a big 125 but it wasn't. It came on the pipe really hard and spun up. I could have played with it but after riding a 17 300 I was converted, it is so easy to ride and does everything really well. I never wanted a 300 before because of the vibes and punchy bottom end but this one is smooth all round. I was actually after a 250 but this one came up at the right price and I'm very happy with it, I just need to get a bit better economy or a larger tank.
