There's a lot of bush but most surrounding town is either National Park or the Regional Park so you need to be very careful or ride a MTB.
Friendly tip the majority of Bendigo's cops live in Strathfieldsaye & Junorton so ride elsewhere.
Quite active at chasing & fining people without rego & licence, the old record was 28 riders in an afternoon a few years ago between 1 police solo & DSE.

Whipstick to the north is the best bet close to town.
Cobaws is close (north of Lancefield).
Castlemaine/Chewton is another popular option.
Avoca is only 90 minutes west.

I have a delightful cherub near my house whose bike wont be in his care by the end of this week. Knob head was noted riding through the estate by an off duty senior detective yesterday who is actively looking for him as the noisy bike made his young daughter cry
I love living in cop land

I thought you could ride in proper National Park, just as long as you stay on the 4WD roads?

Or have I misread - you were only referring to non-rego/licence riders?

You'd need very strong will power to stay on a gazetted road around here. There is MTB single track everywhere. In the NP near me there is 2-4 single tracks in between each gazetted road.

Have ridden out near the rifle range a couple of times. Followed the big fence and where it takes a hard right there is a single track that starts opposite it and goes all the way to mt Sugarloaf. Takes about 1.5 hours one way or so.
