Mildura crash driver legal fee paid by Aboriginal Legal Service ?

Just reading the Age about the 10 year sentence for the 6 killed and injured. Looks like the accused solicitors are the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service. Looks like legal aid may have paid for his defense. Can someone explain how this would work ? Robert Richter would be the most skilled barrister this state has. I can only guess, but his fees would be beyond the reach of ordinary citizens.

Was the accused an aborigine ?

Does it matter what the accused was? (Black or white?)

I mean how does that impact on your view of the outcome?

I'm trying to figure out what the angle is here.

Was the defence unjustified?

The whole idea of separate govt organisations for whites v blacks is a bogus concept in my view and it is one that holds aboriginals back.

The sooner assimilation occurs and we stop treating them differently the better for them.

agreed, why does it matter who defended him, ALS or straight legal aid, all from the same pot originally.

I think it kinda matters, Every news snippet I've heard hasn't mentioned race at all. But in every news snippet I wunder how in f***'s name can 6-counts of man-slaughter while drink-driving only be awarded 10Yrs!!!!

I think the hard life story (because of race & associated social issues) must have had a major role in it.

I still think something nearing life sentence is the minimum he deserves

I'm with Foss. I don't give a shit what colour he is. When I first heard he got off I couldn't believe it. The bastard should have got 20yrs non-parole for killing 6 kids.
Plee bargain??

Does the government hold lawyers to ransom if they dont represent aboriginal ppl?

My guess is no, so therefore he got a good barrister because said barrister decided he wanted to represent him, he may have his own reasons for doing it but in the end thats up to him.

PPl get off on charges everyday because of having a good lawyer so really this is nothing new, doesn't make it right, its just nothing new. It does sicken me when i hear these sorts of things and for once i agree with 2020 nobody should be treated(with regards to law) different because of race as i believe out laws are fair and just no matter what race or religon, but that works both ways as no doubt aboriginal ppl see prejudice every day of thier lives, hence why they have thier own organisation to represent them.

Aboriginal ppl need help, more so than the white population that costs money, so they get more it doesnt really matter so dont begrudge them and just get over it already, its the only way foward.

At the end of the day NONE of this is the aboriginals ppl fault, all these things were put in place by white polliticans to look like they are doing something to help them(and win votes), and therefore trying to whip up some sort of racial hate only serves to make the situation worse.
