  • 2020 Beta Enduro range

Host - ProRacer, West Gosford, NSW.
Location - private property up near Letter A (Watagans), NSW.
    Tracks - 600m sandy mx track & 1.5km of s/t inc g-outs, roots, sandy loam & a few rocks.

I rode the following bikes in order for a lap each of mx & s/t -

    * RR300 - for a first ride, jetting felt awesome, no clouds of blue smoke, (cliche alert!) Ďelectricí-feeling power off the bottom that is stronger and smoother than my Ď18, no vibes, nice & quiet. Mid-top curve is flat (ie, no big hit) & predictable. Didnít get to wind it out too far, but I donít do 110km/h on f/t anyway. Tips in sharply & steers true. A step up in every department from my 300.

    * RR350 - big surprise. The most 2-t like 4-t Iíve ridden. Crazy-smooth motor with super-fun mid-range & stronger than I was expecting low end. One can imagine being tired 3 hours in & clicking 3rd and taking a break. But, when the terrain & talent allows just twist and grin. Revs as much as you can handle. Still manageable in the tight stuff.

    * X-Trainer 300 - my pick for the day. Why? For my preferred terrain (rocky, slow going, clutchy riding) this bike is all I need. Tractable 300 low end torque thru a clean & punchy mid-range to a perhaps modest but still engaging top end. Steers superbly in tight s/t. Balanced & so easy to ride. ďBut what about the crap fork?Ē I hear you say. Well, I didnít go close to bottoming a stock 2020 XT fork (75kg rider rated) today & Iím 88kg on the bike. Compliant, smooth & predictable. My only reservation here is how the fork will hold up to endless rocky beatings at the G & Mont Rouge..

    * RR390 - a mid-range pearler. I found the 390ís power stronger than expected - particularly the mid-top. More power than I need but would be lots of fun in more open terrain. Again, balanced & predictable chassis feel. In the s/t, I started to detect a 4-t kinda Ďtop-heavyí effect when taking tight turns.

*RR430 & 480 - simply too much bike for me. Both have prodigious power with the 480ís bottom end a highlight. If you are a sit down, 100km a day trail rider, either one of these will be more than enough. Comfy, great steering & balance again & both rev their norks off.

*RR200 - more bottom end than I was anticipating, but still requires a busy & very active riding style that would tire me in 30mins. Mountain bike-flickable & what a noise on the pipe! Yee-ha! Very pokey up top. But, ultimately, not the bike for me. A perfect small bore mx bike for a 14yr old though.

Common threads - comfy flat seats giving an Ďon top ofí rather than Ďiní the bike feel, very light clutches all round with great feel, incredible braking modulation & power, quick turning & balanced chassis, ergos were neutral & familiar to me, jetted superbly (2-tís), none of the bikes felt cumbersome or heavy, pretty much zero under- or over-steer (430 excepted), good looking - particularly the RR250 Race on display, drool.

My main take away - gulp, flak jacket on - the Sachs 2020 ZF fork felt as compliant, smooth & joyous as the KYB on my Ď18 Gas Gas EC250.

The 2020 bikes are superbly suspended, powerful, intuitive to ride in standing attack & track like a mofo.

Dislikes - on the RR200 the rear brake reservoir guard wasnít zip-tied & kept catching on the inside hinge of my SG-10. The tyres as fitted (Pirelli MX Extra X rear & MX32 soft front) were rubbish. The 430 under power in the sand was wishy-washy up front - probably the tyre & my lack of talent or sag not quite right for me?

I defy anyone - KTM owner, Gas Gas frother, whoever - to ride this range & not find a bike that you could not happily live with. Very impressive & frankly important range of bikes in the current environment.

Nice review Chris, where you ride the X Trainer 300 would be ideal as you hardly ever see 3rd gear or higher out there.

The lack of ground clearance could be overcome slightly with tall tyres such as shinko 120 ; 505 cheater, and a 100/90/21 front tyre that you favour.

You have got a difficult decision to make if you upgrade so many to chose from.

I take it from your review that the 200 does not trail ride as well as some of the others you test rode.

        Thanks, John.

The 200 is bags of fun & zippy enough, so could you noodle around on it in Gd 2 s/t all day? Absolutely. Willing & peppy little bike. Eg - it would be hoot through all the south side s/t at Ourimbah.

But when the going got a little trickier, I can imagine that because spins up quick and the motor is designed to be ridden on the pipe, you would have to work a little harder - particularly the clutch hand.

Cracking fun through the trees, though!

Yeah, not looking to move the RR300 on just yet - but, hypothetically if Hamish the Beta Marketing & Events Manager said ďPick a bike - take one..Ē, it would take me a while work out RR300 or XT. They are both bloody awesome!

                Hi Guy's
Nice write up Gibbo, similar opinion, the 200 wasn't much fun for me I struggled to keep it spinning but the 350 was the pick of the bunch, goes like a scalded cat but hit the rear brake hard and it slides into corners like a 2 banger.
don't know what my next bike will be.
                Cheers Michael.

The physical size/ergos is about the only thing that puts me off them. That & 2020 Race prices.

Maybe not, the hard anodising still wears off those ZF's prematurely on both ends.

I heard there was some shock anodizing issues but thought it was only the red CC forks with the issue?

Pretty cheap fix if they do wear and you pick it up early and get a quality anodizing treatment thatíll last eons.
Too many leave it far too long before servicing which sure speeds up wear.
