  • KTM close to breaking the $20,000 dirt bike barrier

    KTM has released their 2021 prices and the 300EXC Erzbergrodeo is listed at AUD $19,500 on the road. Just wondering how many would be happy paying that?

    The pricing on the adventure bikes should be interesting as Chinese production of certain models started back in June, so I figure quite a few of the 2021 models will be Chinese. Will this be reflected in the price too?

    There's been a fair bit of debate about recent price hikes, and to what extent it's because KTM headquarters took over the importing into Australia and New Zealand in 2019.

    It's such a huge company now with its Indian and Chinese partners there is debate about whether the focus on profit has overtaken everything else.

    Probably a smart move, TBH.

    KTM knows better than anyone that there’s people out there who are eager to throw money at bling/upgrades. By offering “exclusive” models, they are providing tasty bait for those people.

    There’s probably also marketing psychology for the people who are only looking for the standard model but can be talked up to the Six Days or Erzberg models on a value for money basis.

    Doing it this way also means that KTM can rake in more of their money without risking them buying non-KTM bling.

    In my observation, most of these things will end up in the hands of cashed up older riders (40+) who are incapable of using the base model to its potential and don’t care.

      Also... the $1500 price difference between the 250 and 300 is interesting. Unless there’s between the two bikes that I have missed, that is 100% a desirability tax - nothing to do with what it costs to build the bikes, just jamming the price up to the limit of what people will pay.

        A bloke i knows mate has just put $ down on a KTM 500exc,& he told me he was given a $2k discount, i'm not sure if it's because he is friendly with the shop or not ?

          Economics is a powerful thing, eh? In a distant market, people will pay a huge premium for your product. You own the distributor in that market, so there's no pesky 3rd party cutting into your profit and complaining from afar, and the dealers are disposable. No complaining voices so far..

          Why wouldn't you wring every last cent out of them? f buyers want lower prices, they need to stop buying expensive bikes.

            I have a mate who just got quoted high 14's from one shop and low 15's from another on a 300exc.

              the advertised ride away price is never the buy price i have been quoted some factory shercos priced, the price they say plus on roads is the on road price within $100
              2020 husky 350 on road $14200
              only when stock becomes and issue will prices be take it or leave it mate, 2021 is gonna be a big hole for new bike sales after this years record breaker

              The real problem is KTM upping the rates the rest will and have followed, look at yamaha the wr's are much more expensive this year, gas gas is screwed its KTM now, beta upped the rates last year, shercos are up there with huskies but at least you can see the extra value in there factory models not like KTM 6days it's all about bling nothing to do with performance whats so ever.

                  About 200g of metal is the big difference apparently. Mind you other brands play this game as well. But the interesting thing is at least with KTM you can spend that difference on the complete 300 aftermarket kit and have yourself a spare 250 top end.

                    'Gas Gas is screwed its KTM now'

                    The name is dead, that's agreed (apart from the superb trials bikes), but the enduro bike that attracted KTMs money? Harder to kill than you might think..

                        what i mean it's just going to be a KTM PDS, or WP it's not going to have another brand suspension on it and the price will increase, they brought it for mant reasons but to sell it much cheaper than KTM no, maybe 1K less buts it price will rise

                            Understand fully. It'll just be a red Kato, with whatever minor variations they see fit to separate it from the other Katos. Must be a marketing nightmare..

                            Honestly couldn't care less - not like I'm ever going to buy one. Not even sure whether they intend to make it cheaper or more expensive than the other flavours?

                              Toward the end of the year apparently. They are already available in Europe for the equivalent of AUD$12000. With a bit of luck they would be around the old Gas Gas price or even lower... it would be good to have a decent bike at a budget price to keep the other brands honest. It's looking pretty good.
