  • When the seller says he hasnt ridden the bike in the last 10 years

Picked up a 2004 CRF230 last week for my eldest sons first bike. The guy I bought it off told me he got it brand new for his 13th birthday, he's now 31 and hadn't ridden it much at all in the last 10 years, but that's what they all say
For a 2004 model the bike is in excellent condition but thought a little maintenance might be in order. Oil change/ dump the fuel / clean air filter. Problem was when I went to remove the air filter it literally disintegrated with the slightest touch. Never seen it happen before. I guess he wasn't lying when he said it hasn't been ridden much on the last 10 years...and hasn't been service. With a change of oil, new petrol and new air filter it went perfectly for his first ride yesterday.

Now I just need to get myself a bike

depending on - how remote your considering riding to, tyre knob depth remaining / rubber perishing etc.etc. blah blah
Maybe consider at least replacing the tubes, front and rear.
Also flush the front brake fluid out with fresh new Brake Fluid.

enjoy the ride from there on !

At a guess air filters washed in petrol might hasten their demise.

Air filters will & do fall apart simply due to old age.
            Don't tight-arse fart-arse-about... Replace it asap.

            I wouldn't write-off old bike, I'd factor-in & do-reparation.

            New filters-seals & oil-throughout.. Then I'd-go & ride-it.
Edit: Like any bike you're unfamiliar with: Way-too-suss.
