  • 18 Year Old daughter wants to try riding

OK, No.1 daughter (165 cm, 53 kg) has expressed an interest to try dirt bikes.
Great I thought as I happen to have 2 bikes @ the moment. New KTM & the trusty 2011 Sherco SE3.0i-FR with a lowered seat.
Got her to sit on it yesterday & then try & pick it up. Oh........that's not going to further the cause. Too heavy to pick up.
OK, so the Sherco will be going up for sale but what to replace it with?
Is there anybody out there with a 150 or thereabouts that's looking to upgrade to a bigger bike that would like to swap?
Any suggestions on what bike to be looking for. It shouldn't be an enduro weapon. We'll worry about that if the interest continues. Preferably something that can be registered but @ this early stage I could overlook that.

No experience worth mentioning. 5 years ago she road around a paddock on an 80 but nothing since then.

The CRF230 is a porky 108 kg's. That virtually the same as the Sherco so I don't think I'm gaining much weight loss moving to one of those. I'll take her out to a shop & sit her on a variety so we get a better idea of what's appropriate.

            Good plan.

My first thought was a Crf150f going by the onfo from your first post.

You will need to teach her technique to pick up the bike and get her to practise it and then she can pick up anything without relying on upper body strength so much.

Is she sporty? Gutsy? Picks up things quickly? If so then a 250f with e-start and suspension set up to suit would be good and will see her through beginner and beyond.

If she is more timid in nature, then a 230 would be the better pick. They do weigh a bit but carry the weight differently.

you said "can over look not rego",

Perfect bike is a TTR 125 or DRZ 125 large wheel, take your pick

cheap around 2 to 2.5k easy re- sell

forget any bike that is over 90kgs for girl that weighs 53kgs you will soon put her off dirt bikes, must be small and manageable.

if must be rego.... they are all heavier bikes

                        Agree

Started my 15yo daughter on a ttr125 big wheel. At the time she was 169cm tall (5'6") 60kg. Great bike & size until she advanced a lot and stood up more and started jumping a little at which point I had to fit bar risers and also some spring preload in the forks (a handful of washers!).

They're the perfect starter bike but just be prepared to move it on and get a larger and/or more powerful bike at the right time. My daughter only lasted 6 months on hers and is now on a 125 2T, and it was by far the safest way to teach her skills before putting her on anything taller, heavier or more powerful

The Yamaha will be pretty easy to resell. Made a profit on ours

Similar boat for me, 18 year old isn't fazed about an upgrade but my 16 year old is keen for an upgrade from an XR100.

Not happy with current heavy soft options, had my share of fun wasting time with old bikes, so DT200s etc are out.

Thinking a YZ125 rec regged, lowered and maybe modify a pipe to knock a bit of the peak power off but keep the full rev range.
