  • DBW and the future.

As most of you are aware from this thread: https://www.dirtbikeworld.net/forum/...ll-remain-open, Keg has stepped back from the running of DBW.

Craigy and I have taken over the running (and running costs) of the site.
We both recognise that DBW is a much quieter page than it was a decade ago, but we feel it is important to keep it going for a number of reasons, including the huge archive of information and memories. We also recognise the value of an Aussie site run by Aussie dirt bikers - and not being at the mercy of Auto Moderation where people get banned for calling their dog fat...
We are not planning on any big changes!

The moderating team is not changing (although it now includes craigy and myself).
The general vibe - and rules - of the place won't change - we want DBW to be a place where everyone feels welcome but is not prudish or uptight.
We will keep the vast majority of old threads alive.
We will keep the page going for as long as there is interest.

That said, the intention is to tidy up and refresh a few things. Here's what is planned - feel free offer constructive input:

    1. The "Organise a Ride" and "Ride Reports" sub forums will be merged. Each ride gets one thread that begins with the organisation and then turns into the ride report after the ride has happened.

    2. Some of the unused sub forums will be removed. Basically, any of the sub forums that haven't seen any action for more than five years will either be locked or deleted entirely - thinking TRAG, OBMCC and CCR in particular, but I think all of the "Rider Organisations" sub forums will be looked at carefully.
If you have an opinion on deletion vs locking, then please let us know,

    3. It's very early in the planning, but there has been talk of running another DBW ride.

    4. We have discussed the possibility of a fund raiser to keep the site going. The cost to run the site isn't huge, but it would be good to reduce some of the costs. This would be optional, and we absolutely will not make DBW a subscriber site.

None of this is set in stone - if you have input, then please let us know!

Big thanks to Keg and Galey for their work in getting us this far, and to everyone who still contributes!

And big thanks to Spac and Craigy for the defibrillator.
If there is a ride I may be able to help organise.

      Good work Spac.
I think thinning down the number of sub forums would be good, maybe merging them so the wisdom isn't lost forever.
Have you considered a voluntary contribution scheme to help with the cost ? I'm sure many would be happy to throw in a few bucks.

I've been looking at Patreon and getting some merchandise happening. The problem with merch is that there is an initial outlay and if it doesn't sell you go backwards. The other problem is doing stuff that isn't family, work , vehicle maintenance or riding becomes a low priority for both of us.

                I'm liking the Patreon idea; as/both Craigy & I-have prior-mentioned; as-an option.
There maybe better options out there that Craigy & I are oblivious-to. Comments?

                My idea is a $3 per-month Patreon-contribution; with 2nd & third-tiers being-extra.
Have-that displayed as-an icon (star) along-side the persons avatar: A contributer.

                When-upon $60 has-been contributed: That member will receive a polo-neck shirt.
I proudly liked Drew's DBW black-shirts so-much: That I did purchase five of them.

'Winning Spirit' company still exists & maybe-it 'puter-retained the-our DBW script:
                https://www.winningspirit.com.au/ps05-macquarie-polo

Edit: There are forwarding companies out there; you don't need to post-on shirts.
Everybody wants a cut: They do too: Factor-it-into your overall scheme of things.

I've really got no idea; yet I'm smart enough to know of-which I've got no idea.
Why re-invent the wheel?... Other people have done that... Seek & find those.
                ================================================== ========

                As I've previously said, imo; somebody needs to load/install a duplicate vBulletin® & have a decent/quality fiddle.
That's easily-permitted for a Mod... After loading XAMPP... To load-install a-duplicate onto-their 'puter... Too Easy.

My understanding is vBulletin® permits one master-lord as-owner.. along with the tolerance of a geek; galey atm.
I have the utmost respect for galey & he has the skills.. Yet, he's a busy bloke (fair enough)... Sussing takes time.

                If I were the god-head... I'd surely-initially stuff-it-up... But-so-what... That'd-only be-occur on-my personal-version.
Spac has the commitment & Craigy likely has the skills; maybe galey might be willing to log-in & tidy their syntax?

My suggestion of poper, or someone else, as the god/mod of their-own section; has some-merit as-an option imo.
Regardless imo, this new version of vBulletin® is pretty unworkable atm... Somebody needs-fiddle to restore-old?

                Edit: Don't forget either: There's remote log-in software: Spammer Indian-crooks do use-it to-constantly dupe-us.
There's nothing to say galey couldn't, nor shouldn't, log-into your-own personal 'puter; in-order to make changes.

Edit2: I looked-up definitions of some four letter words that may-might apply to galey: Geek, Nerd, Guru etc...
He may well-be all-of those. Yet: That's by no-means the sum-of his character, ability or intellect: He's a freak.

Edit3: For-sure... Consolidate all-those sections as much as you can... I only-ever use the TODAY'S POSTS.
I know I'm abnormal.. Yet, I often wonder what those so-called normal-people are doing.. I reckon Facebook.

Edit4: I'm not on Facebook... I surely could be... Maybe I'm missing out.... Matter of opinion... Maybe I am.
Whatever & regardless: The/our current DBW-software is difficult to apply & navigate... Our needs-sorting.

Those That Don't Fall... Just Aren't Trying Hard Enough.

People who have/own a site; require access & authority over it's CMS-software imo.
                    It's likely-initially a steep learning curve; yet, thoroughly-fulfilling & satisfying to-suss.

                    I don't have a site: I may pay someone to build-it (likely-not)... Yet, I'd surely fiddle-it.
                    Any-peril of mistake-error is minimal imo.. Since-it's overtly-apparent; other-iteration.

                    vBulletin-fault is due-to user-unfriendliness.. Maybe-sorted without-risk to database?
Oh & btw Spac & Craigy, have decent passwords, not spot & crag; lest I hack yoose.
