  • Garage storage ideas

I've recently moved into my first house and would like to set my garage up with some neat storage and a work bench all along the walls. Any suggestions for efficient effective ways to go about it would be appreciated and pics and links to sources are even better.

I don't have any metal working skills or tools but I've seen some basic bolt up stuff at bunnings that would get the job done but I was hoping there may be a better option that was still economical.

    I need to store
    general power tools
gardening tools incl lawnmower and line trimmer
bike gear incl fluids, ramp, tie downs, spare bits etc.
    Camping gear
everything else that seems to not have a home and ends up under my feet in the shed!

    Cheers

We refurbished our kitchen three years ago and I kept the old kitchen for the garage. Great. Plenty of cupboards and drawers. Easiest way of fitting out a garage.

I made my bench/shelf unit the full length of the garage (out of yellow-tongue flooring) . . it will outlast me
I then had it wired for power, lights, radio, battery chargers and bar fridge - some old carpet on the floor and an old couch for the pups on very hot days or very wet days . .
        Time and tide . .

Go the kitchen cupboards they work a treat and even if they are floor cupboards you can mount to walls, though spend some $ to make sure they are secure.

My tips for what they are worth is do a design based on what you think you will put in there. I've got 2 x bicycles on the wall, kitchen cupboards, work bench and specific storage for camping gear and storage boxes. You can then get the storage to meet long stuff, short fat stuff, tool boxes and anything odd shapped. Also it will help you sort out any problem corners.

Also think if you will have a compressor or other machines and where these might eventually fit. You'll need access and power to machines like compressors and also a clear area if you put in a bench grinder or even work bench.

Get some of those tool hangers from bunnings I think about $10 for a pack 5 or so.

While planning you can design your specific storage to fit neatly. I built in some deep shelves that take the large plastic storage boxes, about 120+ltrs. This depth and hit is about perfect also for swag and fridge freezer (waeco).

If you post a pick do not include the entry and exit points of your storage area, ie where you bike maybe stored etc.
            1. It is far easier to ask for foregiveness than to ask for permission
            2. Only the depth that varies....see #1

If you end up with shelves, make sure they are deep enough. Mine aren't and are a pain in the arse. They also aren't tall enough which is also a pain so make sure you think of these also.

                Two suggestions

                1) An old Wardrobe works a treat for riding gear. You know the ones (laminated timber veneer) with hanging space on one side for jackets and pants etc. On the other side there is storage for Helmets and also draws for gloves and goggles etc. Pick these up from vinnies or from parents/grandparents etc. This one works great for road bike gear. You can just head to the garage, suit up and go riding.

                2) Motocross Enclosed trailer, keep your bike and all your riding gear, tools, spares, cooking and camping gear etc all neatly out of sight, neat and tidy. Pack all your things back in the trailer after cleaning. Hook it up and go riding whenever you feel like it, its all in there already, you wont forget anything.

Yep, but becareful of weight on the shelf material, ie what you are putting on it and have enough braces in place. Though think about what impact the bracing has on space you have. I made a tiered storage box, then put a brace in the wrong way and it reduce the area and some stuff didn't fit. Nothing can't be change it is just annoying

+1 on the big old wardrobe, works great.

                      Another idea

                      3) I bought a secondhand pine display case from vinnies. Mine has 3 cupboards at the bottom, 3 Draws above the cupboards. Then a shelf at bench height. Then 3 Overhead cupboards with glass fronted doors. This is full of all my keepsake, collectables like my T-shirt collection, Cap collection, Stubbie Holder collection, Sticker collection and Trophys up top on display. My wife said they have to be moved from the house so I set up the display case in the garage.

Old lift walls as benches, 1.2x2.4 shelving for camping gear golf clubs etc etc.
Old wardrobes and mezzanine levels if shed is high enough.

Not sure if you were asking me silverfox but my shed is not high enough ( std 30x20). A mates shed is another third higher I reckon and he has put in a mezzanine and loaded it with bikes etc.
                            Grinder and tek screws????
Yes, I use these every day at work constructing lifts(elevators), in buildings.

I wanted cheap too when I got my place so I made a wooden bench with 4x bunnings pine 'sleepers' for a top and old 4x4 offcuts for the frame/legs. All it cost me was the sleepers and some coach bolts. It didn't take long for the sleepers to contract, so now it has a custom reinforced gloss black top (converyor belt ).

For cheap shelves I got 4 of those $20 shelf kits from the local Home Hardware - the flimsy cheap ones with a million little nuts and bolts. They are nasty piles of crap in their own right, but I threw the bolts in the bin, cracked out the rivet gun and proceeded to mount two sets of one on top of the other and then joined the now roof height two sets together to create one roof height double depth shelf. Oh I left out the important part - I fixed it to the wall with raw plugs. Solid as.
