Well, I replaced the starter motor without removing the cylinder head.
Hooray! It can be done.
You just need to remove the cam chain tensioner and the clutch actuator arm and give it a bit of a tap out. It's tight but it works thank *@#&*@#&*@#&*@#&.
Looking at this tight mess, you'd think you can't get the starter motor out without a big hassle. It even says in my manual that you need to take the cylinder head off but you don't.
Brand spankin' starter motor assembly, $189.
The old one had a smashed up brush assembly so I'll order a new brush set and have a spare, just for the sake of it!
I've done 11 hours on the rebuilt Honda now and I'm really happy with it. ^roost Checked the valves, nothing's moved.

I dont know how similar our bikes are, but I got my 450x's starter motor outby taking off the cam chain tensioner and whatever was around that area. It was tough, but not impossible. Careful putting it back in, those little bolts holding it in are a pain in the but to undo and do up and if you drop it under the starter, bloody hard to get out!

No idea if it's true, but worth some googlin' before you start.
Hmm, starter motor out without cylinder off.. That sounds good, but, even with taking the cam tensioner off it looks impossible, but it might not be, I'll do some research. Thanks again!

The work never ends
Well, took the Honds on its maiden voyage today just out to my local area which is rutted, wet and fun. ^roost
The bike was amazing I gotta say. It felt like a new bike should. The motor purred and everything just felt right.
There is one downside to it all though.. I've lost my electric start and now I have to kick it. Oh well, time to harden up a bit.So, yeah, the starter motor is *@#&*@#&*@#&*@#&ed somehow, it just clicks when you hit the button but if you give the starter motor housing a little knock with a screwy or hammer or sumfin it works. I'd say something's worn in it. It has played up a lil' before but I was just hoping everything would be fine, but it's not.
Hooray! Now, I get to take off the cyinder head and cylinder so I can change out my starter motor.
I think I'm just gonna kick it for a while.
*@#&*@#&*@#&*@#& it runs grouse aye. :grinning-
