  • WR250F maintenance schedule?

    Howdy,

I've had an 03 WRF for 6 or so months now, and am well happy with it.

Being a bit mechanically challenged I'm looking for some advice on the maintenance schedule.

I'm happy doing the standard: air filter clean every ride, oil change every 300-350kms, chain adjust stuff, but beyond that I'm a dangerous man with a spanner in my hands!

I need to be thinking about some maintenance before the new season kicks in.

My riding is trail riding with mates every couple of weeks (around 100km), nothing too radical.

What should I be asking my local bike mechanic to do for a pre-season service?

    - check the valves?
    - grease the bits that need greasing (steering head bearings etc)?
    ???

Any info from WRees would be appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,
    T.

One thing I would recommend is to grease the whole bike head stock and suspension. My mate didn't do this to new bike and 6 months later it was all seized up! Valve are easy to check I've adjust mine once in 5000k's. The workshop manual is great for anyone who wants to have a go. Thats basically it. I have thashed mine for 4 years now and its still cranks ^roost

I have an 03 to, If you ride in muddy/wet conditions check/re pack the lower shock bearing and linkage, while your at it do your swingarm bearings. Change the fork oil, lube your cables, check/tighten/locktite bolts. I've had mine near two years and never had any major dramas. These things are bullet proof if you look after them. Heres a good site for WR stuff http://www.thumperfaq.com/index.htm :grinning-

            that is about right

I reckon most dirt bikes benefit from an annual suspension service. You will need a suspension specialist for this usually. Remember to bleed the forks of air after every ride too (see manual)

Check your chain and sprockets for wear and replace as needed. I got about 3,500 out of the standard chain ( did vmx520) Chain gang suggested the same chain.

Check your manual for how to determine whether the chain and sprockets are worn. If in doubt, replace it.

I have been checking the valve clearances at 1500 Km intervals. So far minimal change has been needed.

all the other advice to date seems good in my opinion.

Spend your money on good oil, tyres, sprockets/chain and suspension.

All these things have me scared, I havent been doing many of them at all. Will get the mechanic to show me over them all when I get the valve clearances done in about 200km.

so. "your da bomb and that's a touchdown" = Your very good and you'll go far.
Or so i'm led to believe.

Maybe a FMX'er can explain it better.
