Strumm's mucky rides 2013

slapped together a quick ride vid last night. i was using strummer's chest mount and the angle didn't work so well with my height but still watchable! i'll post it on the main thread too.



by the way, it was quinton who owned the 4wd who very kindly offered to transport R out of the forest to the waiting ambulance.

i tried to get his mobile number in case we wanted to get him a lottery ticket or something to say thanks but he said no way, was just glad to help out. you meet the nicest people hey?

Nice vid giraffe, the additional height of your go pro gives such good viewing angles hahaha.

I have had some pretty epic crashings of my dirt motorcycle but have been lucky enough to come away with mere bumps and bruises. When it is less than that fortunate, why thats just what makes it so much more exciting than baking lamingtons on a Sunday afternoon

However I SWEAR by wearing knee braces, both knees got a real bad hit yesterday, without, I know my right at least would have been toast. Knees just aren't that strong for this stuff.

Dingo, Ro, was great to meet you guys and I am very glad to hear that the incident has not put you off the sport Ro.

As I said yesterday, Jo had hundreds of sideways drops just like that one (and still does, with those short legs!), it's just the bad luck of the draw that Ro had an injury so early on.

And for future reference, when we say 'GO AS SLOW AS YOU LIKE' we really mean it!!
There is no pressure on any of our rides for people to do anything they are not comfortable with, or to ride faster than they want.

Of course we will try to encourage you to extend your boundaries a bit, but only to the point where you feel safe (or as safe as riding can ever feel, anyhow).

I was thinking about Mickd all yesterday afternoon. Here is one of the best riders I've ridden with, fully experienced and very skilled, who just happened to be caught out by a rut hidden under the mud. You just never know!

and +1 on the knee braces comment from the (rather short) chick above. a US research project found proper braces roughly halve your chances of serious injury to knees. we slapped a basic guide to protective gear here.

I was definitely the one putting pressure on myself...and that will not be happening again! While I am laid up in bed I'm checking out better knee braces...I'm sure that things would have been worse if I had no knee protection on at all...so I am very grateful I did! Strummer, the guys and the dude with the fourbe were awesome help! Keen to get back out...keen to meet more guys and especially girls!

At the risk of being completely wrong about this and I apologize for it if I am....it's unfortunate your girl got injured but strummer did say this was a ride where grade 1-2 riders can have a go at more challenging stuff,otherwise he would have stated this is a grade 1-2 ride and there will be no challenges,I know that lead riders take it to heart when someone gets injured on their watch,they and the sweeps and helpers do an amazing job just so we can have rides to attend and help available-not many people do it at all.

There is always confusion over what grade people are and it really is up to the individual to see if they are suitable for the ride or not and you can always bail out if you find you are in over your head,hope she has a quick recovery and gets back out there soon

strummer's specific wording was "...newer riders out there who would like to step up to grade 2-3 terrain..." i believe the ride was exactly this with plenty of easy stuff in between for people to get their breath back. but i know people may read different things into the grading system used....

as a ride organiser i've come across the same thing where the original post wasn't read or the meaning was misinterpreted and it can get a bit discouraging as it takes way more time and work to organise these rides that you would think. plus you can't relax and enjoy the ride so much since you are constantly keeping an eye out for everyone.

so a massive thanks as always for the ride, strummer, and hope you do keep organising them! thanks to the sweep riders too and to those who did pitch in to help or encourage other riders.

i'll have a ride video posted later. and that's really good news on the knee, dingo! we had our fingers crossed that it wasn't too serious so that's a huge relief. and that is hasn't shaken her confidence...

EDIT: just realised some may not have read up on the DBW grading system.

LEVEL 2 - WHERE TO NOW ? - We know how the bike works thanks! We want to ride some tracks and get the hang of a how to ride up a hill and through ruts and rocks and varied terrain.

LEVEL 3 - CONFIDENT - I've seen most of the types of obstacles riding has to offer and a good idea of how to handle them, the odd push and helping hand wouldn't hurt. No crazy hills yet though!

Should also add that Strummers rides also say "plenty of help where help needed". If you truly dont feel confident, then stop and ask for assistance. Someone will even ride your bike up for you if you need it.

Not going to help anyone criticising or analyzing. Our sport is laden with risk and its part of the natural progression of improvement that we must challenge our abilities in order to get better at what it is we chose to do. All of those risks should be calculated, however they're still risky.

Personally, I think someone with only 10hrs ride time would be better off riding somewhere like QMP where they can ride graded trails with a more experienced rider acting as a mentor / coach. This allows them to ride at their own pace and most importantly, allows them to hit the same terrain over and over again and to understand and perfect their technique. This is a big plus for new riders and really should be a must for them. Riding trails following a group of faster / more experienced riders, you hit everything usually in rushed panic with often no idea how to approach it and you either make it or you don't. If you get stuck, someone will probably be there to to help you get through the section where you're stuck, but that only teaches you how to get out of trouble, not how to avoid it in the 1st place. You can only learn that by riding somewhere you can hit the same stuff over and over again without fear that you're holding people up or getting in the way.

I wasnt there on the weekend, but it seems it was nothing more than an unfortunate accident. Luckily you had the good sense to be riding in a responsible and caring group who could get you out to help safely. I hope the leg heals fast and you're back out hitting trails and working on your skills, soon

except for the word "sport", I dont ride for sport I ride for enjoyment, fitness, excitement and meeting people. I could never describe it as sport, it implies competition and I do not compete on rides. My 2c no offense meant.
