  • Pierces Creek Forest (Cotter), ACT - Single Trails

Hi all, thought some people might get some use out of the map I've made of all the single trails I could find in the Cotter area. Don't write off some of the awesome trails in our own backyard!

    Pierces Creek Forest (https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?m...oV&usp=sharing)

Happy for any feedback, or trails that I missed!

I almost didn't post this because I've seen people being secretive about the location of trails around Tallaganda. If I ever map Talla I won't post it, but as for the ACT the government already know where these trails are, and they are all approved and legal

    Cheers!

Lots of trails have been lost to the forest thinning on the north/east side of PRR.
There’s also one good one that you have missed - Sheldon’s.

Hopefully the trail fairies will add some more! There's definitely still some spare room, including surprising places like the area just SE of the PRR/LCR corner. I've started mapping Uriarra/Brindabella too, and there's even more space out there

Any tips on where I might find this Sheldon's trail? And have you gone on the track(s) marked with purple question marks a bit south of Murrays Corner? The hill there was too much for me to tackle for now

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I don't see the benefit in posting this content.

            Why thankyou Mr hairyone

JJW - Well I doubt I'm risking clogging up a forum that averages less than one post a year, but here's a few benefits I can think of:
            • People who have ridden there before might discover a cool track they've missed, especially those who don't have the time to go riding slowly down every fire trail looking for singles (and Spac says I still missed a cool trail even though I did search the whole forest for singles...they're easy to miss)
            • It can be used to plan a trip using as many singles as possible, or guide you on the fly
            • Beginners (like me) can use this to avoid tricky areas so they don't get bogged, broken down, or stuck on rutted hills (like I did)
            • This would help people on the fence about buying a dirt bike in the ACT (like I was) to see just how many tracks there are in the area, without having to go out to Talla. Particularly handy for people who don't have trailers (like I don't)

The Cotter is a maze of ST, some of which is hard to find and/or poorly linked. Forestry have been performing thinning operations on the pine plantations lately, which has made a big mess of a lot of the established trails, often making it impossible to find the entrance to tracks that you know are in there.

I understand the reasons why single trails are often kept quiet, but I don’t think any of those reasons apply to the Cotter area.
While we have the usual issues with unregistered bikes and the occasional moron, for the most part dirt bikers have a good relationship with the authorities who manage these forests and the need for secret squirrel is minimal.

To answer your question, I have been riding there semi regularly for nearly 15 years, and some of those squiggles are news to me.
Some other squiggles are “ah, so that’s where that track begins! We haven’t been able to find the way in since 2012!”.
I will be using it the next time I am out there - at a minimum, it will help us to get a visual reference on places that we know but don’t have names for.

I am pretty sure that the more northern one is the Hill to Nowhere. Its entry requires you to approach from the right, and it curves right early on.
If it is the same hill, it goes for a couple of hundred metres and then fades to nothing. It’s not too hard in the damp, but is more difficult in the dry, where the middle section get loose and slippery.

I am trusting my dodgy memory saying this, but I think that the more southerly hill is an old MTB DH track. About halfway up is a timber and dirt jump. We walked it a while back and it looked challenging but rideable - but I think that it didn’t go anywhere useful.
Combined with the fact that it was an MTB track (albeit unused for some time), meant that we didn’t try.

Sheldon’s comes off PRR, in the northern part of your map. It’s the most difficult loop I know of out there. There are harder parts elsewhere, but this loop was clearly set by someone who knows what they are doing (not me) and is lightly trafficked.
