  • 20141025 26 DSMRA Hoskinstown to the Bay Adventure Ride

On Saturday I rode my DR650 out to Hoskinstown for an 8.00am rendezvous for the ?Hoskinstown to the Bay? (and back ride) adventure ride. Bergdonk DR650 (leader), Andrew KTM640, Mike KTM 990, Graham BMW GS650 (sweep), Glenn DR650, Honda 450, Riobhan KLR 650, DRZ400

After briefing Bergdonk led us off east on Forbes creek Rd, south on Bald Hills FT and then Lowden Trig FTR pausing for a regroup at Lowden Rd. We then took the western side of Coxes Creek Rd and bypassed Mount Cronin to join Main Range Rd. We crossed Foxlow Gap and continued south on Rocky Pic Rd pausing for another regroup at Parkers Gap.

Bergdonk then led off east while Graham and I as sweeps paused while Glenn replaced his GPS batteries and then headed south on Cowangerong FT. At the junction with Cowangerong 1359 weather radar I caught up to Glenn and Graham who were discussing the lack of a corner man and tyre tracks. Graham checked his GPS plot and I considered we had to be going south to get to Badja FT. Glenn opted for a quick check to the south while Graham found his side stand spring had gone missing and had to cable tie the stand in the up position. Luckily he had a centre stand backup. Glenn returned to us and we took a brief ride up Cowangerong to find it a dead end.

We decided to push on to the junction with South forest Way (SFW) and Flat Range FT (FRFT). Here it was decided to leave Glenn on post while Graham and I rode back to Parkers Gap. Graham took SFW while I backtracked on Cowangerong. Graham beat me there and neither of us had seen any sign of tyre tracks. So the one other option was that Bergdonk had led them out to the Braidwood Cooma Rd. So Graham and I headed there to see if there was a bored corner man there, but to no avail.
On backtracking to Parkers Gap we by chance caught up with Adrian, Birgitte and others of the Enduro support team and then Peter (Enduro leader). I asked if we could join his ride, but he did not seem too conducive to it. So Graham and I headed back on SFW to rejoin Glenn.
We then opted to continue south on FRFT and Jerrabattgulla FT. We then opted SE on North Jinden FT and south on Jinden Ridge FT to link onto Cooma Rd. We then took Badja FT south still not seeing any evidence of traffic. On one steep ascent I was trailing Graham when he had a big skip from one side of the trail to the other and slowed down. I slowed and passed him but did not have the right gear and having lost momentum stalled on the face of swale and slipping backwards dropped the bike and made a swan dive . I was quickly up to see that Graham had also come to grief against the left hand side bank. We both quickly gathered ourselves up and I righted my bike and put a rock behind the back wheel in an attempt to stop sliding further back down the hill. Graham scaled up to me and steadied my bike while I got it restarted and stalling again and slid back into the RHS bank. At least I could not slide back further. After a second restart and a shove from Graham I managed to feather the clutch and accelerator to scale up the last 25m to a relatively flat area.

Graham had removed his back bag and scaled up towards me and I scaled down to take it up to the flat. I then descended and assisted Graham to right his bike only to find his LH rear pillion peg had sheared off. After safely stowing it I steadied Graham?s bike and he scaled up past my bike. After another breather we took off after Glenn. We came across Glenn who was on his way back to us to see what was holding us up.
Graham led us past Woila FT and New Falcon Rd (NFR) and we started east on Falcon Rd which was dis-used and had sharp swales with sharp ditches so after a few kms we opted to head back to NFR. Here, I took the lead after warning of the decomposed granite, sharp hairpins and dodgy cattle grids.

The descent was a breeze and we had been picking up the tempo. Graham took the lead on Cadgee Rd and River Rd heading east and then the delightful Reedy Creek south. I pass pushing along trying to catch up to Graham and Glenn. At Jc Rd we turned east and then took Morts Folly north to Cobra Rd.
Lord and behold who was waiting at the junction but Bergdonk. So after some explanations of our logics Glenn got a refuel from the support vehicle ?Clifford? with Alex and his brother so he could join their group and do Cols link. Whereas I followed Graham east on Tobacco Pinch Rd, Box Cutting Rd, Kianga Rd, Princes Hwy south into Narooma for refuel. We then slabbed it to Moruya through a short rain storm and again catching up to Bergdonk and Glenn at Moruya. The four of us then slabbed it to Batemans Bay and the Mariners Hotel. My tripmeter read 400kms. I stayed for a schooner and a yarn with Andrew, Mike, Glenn and Bergdonk before heading for Depot arriving just on dusk.
On Sunday I was up early with the intent to rendezvous with the others at Big Bit LO. But having time in hand I rode in to the Mariners hotel where both Adventure and Enduro Groups were ready for departure. They must have got a good early breakfast.
Bergdonk didn?t waste time and led us off at about 8.00am. North towards Cullendulla and then NW on Picnic Rd, NE on Ironbark Rd, north on Shannons and Lookout Rds, we were fairly flying and had a good rhythm. Joes Nose north was a blast and Burma east as well. Tower Creek Rd north had some dodgy sand sections which made some of us recall how to ride sand with weight back, loose grip and right gear selection to power through. It was then Donovans Rd to Old Princes Hwy (OPH) where I gave a wistful wave to East Lynne as I hadn?t had any breakfast.

We powered up OPH and then took Boardinghouse Rd to link onto The Old Hwy, Middle Ridge Rd and then onto Old Coach Rd. This was moist and slippery and I was taking clues from Mike ahead of me on the KTM990. He was managing well. It was then Monkey Mountain Rd before turning west on Brooman Rd and then North on Three Falls Rd. Enroute we encountered the Milton Rural Fire Service trucks at various points. We turned west on Clyde Ridge Rd encountering more RFS vehicles.

We were fairly flying along to Yadboro Rd which had been graded recently and the red clay was slippery. Crossing Yadboro Flats we were now on Western Distributor and again the pace was on. At a regroup at Wallaby Rd, Mike opted to call it quits and Graham opted to head for the Bay as he was not feeling well, but rejoin us at Old Bolaro Rd (OBR). So I took on sweep duties with ?Clifford? backing me up.
We set off east on Wallaby Rd and then south on Waterfall Rd which I hadn?t ridden since 2010, and it was a delight. We turned east on Lyons Rd and east again on Caves Gully Rd which was again good fun. We all got safely across Currowan Creek where the Road becomes Peach Tree Gully Rd. We took Black Flat Rd west, Blitz Rd SE, McCardys Creek Rd south, Kings Hwy briefly east and had a regroup at OBR. It wasn?t long before Graham re-joined us.

Bergdonk then led us off south and west on OBR which was a great smooth ascent to Cabbage Tree FT to Misty Mountain Rd and Kings Hwy for the ascent to Monga NP which we entered via River Forest Rd and Old Araluen Rd and Northangera FT before exiting back onto Kings Hwy and turning north for 0.8kms to turn north on Northangera Rd before turning west into Monga SF and traversing it NW. Midway at a junction (with a wrecked Mitsubishi Colt and a motorcycle (presumably stripped) beside it) the rider ahead of me went straight on where I was sure from previous traverses we should have turned right. So I took chase with ?Clifford? following. I was flying tooting and hitting the driving lights but the rider came to a gate where we turned back and had ?Clifford? do likewise. Before exiting the forest Glenn had ridden back to find us. We exited onto Mongarlowe Rd and made for Braidwood for Pies (my breakfast).
It was then west into Tallaganda and straight up Mulloon FT and Forbes Creek Rd into Hoskinstown. Here we parted ways with Bergdonk of south and the rest of us west for Queanbeyan and Canberra. My tripmeter now read 740kms.

Thanks to Bergdonk for leading, Graham for sweeping, and ?Clifford? for backup!!!
