OFFICIAL MEADIA RELEASE
SUCCESSFULL RECREATION EXPO STAGED IN WATAGAN STATE FORESTS
The First Forest Recreational Expo to celebrate the diverse and active pursuits
undertaken in the State forests of the Watagan Mountains was held Sunday 5th
November.
Forests Recreational Council Secretary and event coordinator, Mr Rod Cartwright,
said that a number of forest user groups had come together to stage the inaugural
Forest Recreation Expo at one of the Watagans most popular sites. The aim of the
expo was to showcase local forest-based recreation and sporting pursuits and give
people the opportunity to learn about the area and activities.
“The Forest Recreation Council was formed to promote responsible use of State
forests and other public lands in the Hunter Region and Central Coast,” Mr Cartwright
said. “Council membership currently includes the four-wheel drive association,
Australian Horse Alliance, Dual Sport Motorcycle Riders Association, Trail Riders
Action Committee, Mountain Bike Association, National Parks and Wildlife Service
and Forests NSW.
“We have tens of thousands of people visiting the Watagans each year for sport and
recreation. Many of the people using the forests are members of responsible clubs,
but many others aren’t aware of the groups or the benefits of being a member.
“Forests NSW are working with the Forest Recreation Council to encourage
responsible use of State forests, and also to develop a partnership approach to the
management of many issues like anti-social behaviour and dumping of rubbish.”
“The Watagan forests are vital for our recreational pursuits, providing the opportunity
for locals and tourists to freely enjoy the great outdoors.
Mr Cartwright said that participating associations had stalls and demonstrations at
the expo site, located at Olney Camping Area where people were able to talk to club
representatives about safe and sustainable ways to enjoy local State Forests and
national parks
