Or something like a stock impound permit used for fishing in dams ... The money goes into a reveg fund, when the designated trail is deemed worn out, they move the trail and use the fund to reveg ... Seems simple to me

But riders don't knock any tree's down, we ride around them? single track rehabilitates itself within 12-24 months of no use.
As con said - they don't hesitate to put in a new road that knocks down a 40m wide path of trees down along it's way, or putting in a new firebreak that knocks down more trees than all the "illegal" tracks in the entire forest do. It's just unfathomable to suggest that we cause any real damage compared to what the government agencies do in the name of "forest management". (Or compared to natural forces).
In fact half these forests were knocked flat with logging 80 yers ago, so even suggesting what we are doing now is damaging is ridiculous.
It's just a control/anti-fun thing. There's no actual science, logic or purpose to anything they're doing.

Joe Public that can't ride a bike for one or more of many many reasons is not happy that we are out living life and enjoying ourselves and are getting away with using noise or the green slant as their excuse to shut us down.
Miserable old pricks that have outlived their use by date, yay for modern medicine.Eat sleep ride repeat.

Looks like DSE are sending in a crew to tidy up the area where the photos were taken. Now that it is too wet to burn they can only try to drag a few felled trees back to help make the previous reveg areas look like they aren't part of a highway because they can't rehabilitate until after they burn.
Funny how when they were doing the track closures I was told they would lay foam down to protect the planted trees when they did fuel reduction burns! Not much point doing that now!!!!
The fact is that DSE works in extreme cycles because even those within the department that know what they are doing (I can think of a couple of people) are bound by public and political pressure. One cycle we get the greenies with power and DSE gets political pressure to send crews out with bandaids to hug trees and tend any wounds. In the meantime proper forest management goes out the window, recreational user groups get shafted and the bush turns into a ticking bomb. Then a disaterous fire rips through and the balance tips to the other extreme when the dozers come in and do in one foul sweep what should have been sublte and ongoing works that have been part of an annual program for the last fifty years. Again recreational user groups get shafted because they use the new tracks and cleared parking areas near private land and the we end up in the greenie cycle again!
I wish people would realise this hopping from extreme policy to extreme policy is the worst longterm management regime we can have.
On a positive note, it does show that we can be involved in these issues and organisations like VTRN can get outcomes if people bring their issues to us or raise with their clubs and get the club to contact VTRN. Nothing happens if nobody says anything.Super Duper

I am fairly sure that the trailbike initiative had ticked most boxes of it's intended purpose. What is disappointing is the failure to obtain future funding for a continuation of the program. I was witness to the huge effort by department staff to obtain funding by any means nessesary, but was knocked back from the minister's office (as was many other worthy programs) in favour of a huge spend on fire prevention.
It sadens me (not angers) that replantings have been disturbed / destroyed.
I , aswell as many OTR members and local community (sorry Bruce and Con, you both must have had pre engagements) attended and took part in a replanting day.
But that is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.
There are plenty of places in the Otways to ride bikes.
Just don't do it all in the one area.

90 000 hectares+ of our bushland in Victoria has been handed over to private foreign interests alone. Of course they always say, "we use best practice management techniques etc etc". You would have to be a complete nob to believe that shite.
The gov departments involved are a pathetic bunch of hypocrites.== Zero respect.
Here is a few pics of my area. Please explain, DSE and other Nobs how this doesn't add to water turbidity, weed propagation, errosion etc.
I doubt us evil single track riders could even begin to compare.
